Contraversial! Someone told me the inventor of the term says 'jif' even though most folks use 'gif' and that really threw me. Up to that point I assumed it was a hard g at the front.
@abadesi@rhs Well he is clearly wrong! LOL ;) Just having to use a different spelling to explain it should be a clue that he made the wrong decision. Moving on, is it really Lady Ja Ja??? I've spent 20 years saying Gif and I'm not changing now.
All right thinking people who have been working in the tech industry since the late-80's/early-90's know that it's pronounced 'JIF'.
Young Hotshot Code Monkey: "JUST ASK AROUND, EVERYONE AGREES IT PRONOUNCED 'GIF'!!"
Me: "OK, Millennial"
Back in the DOS days, my company Genus Microprogramming sold the GIF Toolkit and we pronounced it "JIF" given the inventor of the format pronounced it that way. Besides, Alex Trebek says so, and that's that.

The story goes that at the time the devs working on the project would say “choosy developers choose gifs,” and reference to the old Jif peanut butter slogan (“choosy Moms choose Jif.”
Just two choices isn't enough... I actually prefer the non-controversial Swedish Chef pronunciation, "Yif". My grandfather came from Sweden, and old school muppets are awesome... current ad campaigns notwithstanding.
Well since it stands for Graphics Interchange Format I would have to assume the "G" would be pronounces that same way as the "G" in the root word Graphics. It's not Jraphics. so...
Graphic image format. It is spelled with a hard G. So it's GIF. Who care what the inventor says. He was wrong and he practiced erroneous accronimony. So that's it.
Let's end this debate already, lol! The acronym stands for "Graphics Interchange Format". The "G" should be a hard "G" for "Graphics". Not a soft "G" similar to the sound of "JIF". If we call it "JIF" we might as well start calling "Graphics" "Girrafics" 🦒😜
