Does OCR still need solutions?

I did some recreational programming and wrote an OCR algorithm that seems to be unique if not interesting. I did some reading and found that OCR seems to be a solved problem. Then I found this article https://research.aimultiple.com/ocr-technology/ according to which the remaining problem is reading handwriting. Is anyone here in the OCR industry have any opinions on this? Is handwriting reading the last problem? Are there any problems outside of handwriting that need to be solved?
