NEWS: Adobe has announced it's buying Figma 👀
Featured

According to multiple reports including Bloomberg, Adobe and Figma are set to finalise a deal for the purchase of Figma for a whopping $20 billion! What do you think of this deal, does it make sense, do you wish Figma would stay independent? 🧐 Update: Since writing this, Adobe have confirmed that they are in fact buying Figma, Figma will remain independent and Dylan Field will remain as CEO.

Great for them, bad for us. I pay such insane prices for Adobe, paying 90% for tools I don't even use. Figma was a bright spot in design tools that I thought could eventually lead Adobe to changing up their pricing in order to compete

@jmitch Thing I don't like is trying to cancel with Adobe, end up paying a small fortune in order to stop paying...
Justin Mitchell
@aaronoleary oh 100%. Adobe one time wouldn't let me cancel a license when an employee of mine DIED. True story.

@jmitch Feel free to check out Antetype – all designing & prototyping is free (plain plan only covers hosting and advanced collaboration features)

I think the deal makes sense personally but I do personally hope to see Figma independent, it's amazing having such a strong competitor to the previous monopoly on design tools from Adobe!

@aaronoleary Why personally? Isn't that the only opinion you have. I also have the same feeling. Great tool, to bag it is attached to a big slow moving one.

Fearful of what this will mean regarding pricing plans and accessibility for smaller teams moving forward.

Welcome back, Sketch

Definitely not a fan of this since I generally like what Figma has been doing, and generally not impressed with Adobe (and I started at Photoshop 2 (?) in the 90's!). Seems like Adobe could face some monopoly legal risks, as well.

@coreywstone I've also watched Adobe morph and grow over the last 30 years. My first vector drawing program was Aldus Freehand! I remember Altsys/Aldus merged with Adobe, but the FTC nixed the deal in 1994 over market monopoly concerns. Of course Altsys was later bought by Macromedia, which was then bought by Adobe. 🙄 I would love it if Adobe would fold Figma in with the full CC Suite for the same subscription price. But Adobe's history makes me less than optimistic.

Okay, guys what are Figma alternatives? 😄

@basv We're looking into moving forward to @framerapp Framer Sites but lots of people are talking about moving back to Sketch.
Daniel Butler
@basv gonna give https://penpot.app/ a try but perhaps more likely to return to dear Sketch since they now have collab tools. If we only knew they would never sell to Adobe …

Figma was tapping into the core Adobe, it's usual for settings as such. Figma team and employees get a great pay-off for the effort, while, Adobe gets to improve their marketshare in the longer run.

I'd also probably sell for 20 Billion.
Aaron O'Leary
@emmettnaughton same, no hesitation whatsoever

20B in this economy?!

Wow, that is a surprise and not a surprise at the same time :) Figma defeated them all!!

@yucelfaruksahan If you can't beat em, buy em 🤷‍♂️

That's sad, I'd prefer they remained independent. I am not a fan of what Adobe has become in my life as far as subscriptions

I expected to see Figma independent, it sure was a big competitor on the rise. Now even if they say it will be independent, I'm sure that as time goes by Adobe's hands will be seen, the time will come when they offer only subscription. It's a monopoly!! 😭 Similar to Disney when it bought Fox.

Will see what happens in nearest future. I guess it's a great chance for Sketch as an independent designer tool also. But, probably they buy the whole team and will not change the major direction of the product.

I don’t see how figma can remain independent since adobe will likely bundle the offerings into their suite and figma’s freemium offering isn’t supported - hence their sales teams appear to be in conflict. If Adobe takes over sales, figma will lose direct insights into their audience and this likely affects value of their product roadmap. Dylan likely has 2 years lock-in so expect to see loss of independence from 2025 should he leave at that point. This means we have 2 years to migrate teams to independent alternatives…

We already pay full subscription for Adobe and Figma separately. After the merge, I assume, Adobe will ditch XD and replace with Figma. As a result, we'll likely to pay less invoice :) But today Adobe Inc: 318.57 USD −$52.17 (14.07%)today

Phew, so good that I have been using Lunacy. Hope they'll not acquire it too 😭
Ali El (CEO)
My hope is that Adobe leaves it as it is and Figma runs independently but reality might be the opposite. They'll put it right into their lineup.

Big companies usually try to buy competitors to remain relevant or chase them with copying features. If you look at the past, most fail. If Figma is truly left alone, then it has a chance. If not, then it opens the doors to another new startup coming in and winning the hearts of designers. Can't blame Figma though for jumping at a deal like that!

I have moved from Figma to Siter.io. Now I convert all my Figma design files to a live websites based on this tutorial https://designmodo.com/export-fi... That's sad, I'd prefer they remained independent. I am not a fan of what Adobe has become in my life as far as subscriptions

The Figma team has built a great product and incredible business. I would have loved to seen them take it public and keep going, but it is impressive in terms of what they built and accomplished. Who knows what it will mean for the long term...we will have to see. I think it is a fun time to be building creative tools and for me and the team at Play, we're pretty energized by this news and are excited to keep building!

Anti trust laws? Yes, no? Interesting how this went on so smoothly.
