I think Twitter now has a lot of baggage and an identity crisis. Twitter = tweets, it doesn't allow the platform to grow more into spaces, podcasts, images, videos, ads, etc. which look to be the way Twitter is moving towards becoming a more social place.
@hafeezcae I like that he is thinking outside the box - like why would you not include payments? If you support payments and have a good payment gateway, why not allow peer-to-peer payments? Why not allow better communication among twitter/X users?
@tanaylakhani yup, that's why I smell from miles away. He's a capitalist through and through. He proved his tenacity after coming back from nervous breakdown after his own mentors and persons he looked up to turned their back against him in the early Tesla days.
I think they are lucky that they already have a community that it will keep using it, at the moment, but I believe from the brand and communication perspective X means nothing. I guess it is the beginning of the end. Slowly we will see more things from "Twitter" where the grow is flat and start to decrease the usage and the revenue coming from users and ads. There is not much value for the users, how many of the users are really identified with this? Not many.
Thanks for bringing up the topic. It's always interesting to see how big platforms evolve and adapt. Speaking of exciting changes, we've got something special happening today at ProApp! 🚀 While we can discuss Twitter's domain change, I'd also love to share some exciting news about our own launch. Twitter is such an iconic name. Even how you post on Twitter as “tweets” became common slang. Not sure what his goal is with this move, but it will be interesting to watch how it evolves.
Innovative? Refreshing? Let's see Meta, Alphabet, etc. I remember when those ideas were "fresh an innovative," and besides being years ago they were not recycling a name. This is just more inept flailing in desperation while the platform dies. Will my 8.00 get me a blue x now?
The X symbol often means add something here. I think Twitter will stay. It will just become a tool of X. To me it is clear that Musk is seeking to expand the platform into a more comprehensive media and business hub for content creation. Keeping it as Twitter diminished the appeal of such a scope: we all go to Twitter to tweet and for tweets, much less for threads, spaces and live streaming, and it would be even less for posting and selling content. Imagine "tweeting" long essays or elaborated paid content: it won't be Twitter anymore. I think X will become a container which will feature, among others, the chance to tweet, share, promote content hosted and distributed on X. Blue check and subscriptions are two very clear signs of it. I think it's a smart move, busines wise, and probably the only available path towards better monetization.
I think it could be the beginning of a super app where they could extend with other services sort of like wechat. X is a more generic name for a similar app instead of twitter.
I'm excited. The rise of free social networks (Fediverse etc.) is for real this time and X.com will be the death of Twitter. The obsession with "everything app" is a meme at best.
Everything App is not a thing that anybody wants. Primarily because it never works. It doesn't exist for a reason - because everything apps suck. Competition is what makes capitalism work.
Twitter has a very valuable brand and a large following. This is likely some kind of personal decision by Elon, more like nostalgia for the good old days.
This is an interesting blast from the past. X.com was Elon's original startup before it merged with Confinity and became PayPal in 2000.
Musk bought back the X.com domain name from PayPal a few years ago. So now Twitter is potentially looking to use it as their new domain name under Musk's ownership.
I am curious if this is just a temporary step, or if Twitter will fully rebrand under X.com. The name doesn't seem like a great fit for Twitter long-term. But it does signal Musk's desire to put his own stamp on Twitter after acquiring it. X.com has personal history for him.
Practically, it may cause some temporary disruption if links, apps, etc need to switch from twitter.com to x.com. For users, it will take some time to get used to typing x.com out of habit instead of twitter.com if it becomes permanent.
Overall, it's an unusual move that highlights E's unconventional approach. It will be interesting to see if X.com is just the start of bigger changes to Twitter under his leadership. The platform's identity could evolve quite a bit.
@elenat this is actually leading somewhere. Given how Elon is into the defi and blockchain industry as well. It’s his plan probably to run Twitter as an app with super features, not only just socializing but also buy and sell with wallets connected to it. The old x turned into an app to mobilize money transferring. I guess the new X.com is aiming to a more complex idea. App that we could do all thing, including trades, buy and sell all in one app.
I believe it's part Elon's continues evolution of Twitter. He wants to make it into THE social media platform that will have something for everyone. As that happens, Twitter as a name might become less relevant and also associated with the battles of old. X gives it a neutral beginning.
