1.1.1.1, the privacy-first DNS resolver is now available on the go. No one should be able to snoop on what you do on the Internet. We've created 1.1.1.1 so that you can connect to the Internet securely anytime, anywhere.

Unsurprisingly fantastic app by the @cloudflare team. @adaptive @irtefa2 @eastdakota

Very easy to know what the service provides and just as easy to install/use it. ✅

Is there any reason/situation where you WOULDN'T want to use it? Any downside?
Allie Law
@bendebayle I used it when it was first released and the stability wasn't great. Having said that I've heard it's got better.
Andrew DiLosa
@bendebayle If you're on a network with custom DNS settings, say a home network with a PiHole or a work network with internal DNS, then overriding your phone directly to 1.1.1.1 may make some content/features inaccessible.

I love the app itself, but enabling the 1.1.1.1 service gave me an average speed decrease of around 20% up and down. I contacted support about this (via their app) but didn't get a reply, if they respond I'll update this review.

It's a free service so there's no harm in trying it out, but make sure you do your own testing to ensure that you are helping not harming your connection.

TLDR; YMMV

Pros:

The app itself is slick and simple and makes setting up the service easy.

Cons:

It may make your internet slower, be sure to test for yourself.

I would advise tech savvy people to use their own private proxy server/s or better their own VPN/s, if their cell bandwidth can handle the latter.

How does it affect the battery life?

I'm really REALLY hoping this doesn't hog the battery..

Anytime, anywhere? As in China?

On Android Pie, you can just set the "Private DNS" url to "1dot1dot1dot1.cloudflare-dns.com" https://blog.cloudflare.com/enab... No app required!

28% faster is pretty huge, how did you manage to reach that number?

@aaronoleary @jakewesorick Wouldn't this make Google's 8.8.8.8 faster?

@aaronoleary @jakewesorick Is there any public data available to support that? (Not questioning the statement)
Zack Bloom
@aaronoleary You can check out one set of tests here: https://www.dnsperf.com/#!dns-re... Looks to be more than 28% to me at the moment. This obviously only helps you with the DNS resolution portion of a request.

Does the app do anything that manually configuring my DNS to 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1 doesn’t do? I’ve been using Cloudflare DNS since it became available, switched over from GoogleDNS and its been better. I know the app will carry over my iOS DNS settings from network to network but I’m always either on my home/work WiFi or LTE so manually configuring isn’t a pain.
Zack Bloom
@duffc Yes. It allows you to use DNS-over-HTTPS which encrypts your DNS traffic. It's also the only way to set a custom DNS on cellular networks on iOS.
A_Sky
Hi, this looks very appealing but are we becoming the “product” as user in the end? We hear many times that when it’s free there’s a catch behind.... also what difference is there with other VPN provider? This is said I may install it right away to try it :)
.
@a_sky > also what difference is there with other VPN provider? It's not a VPN - It just changes your default DNS provider to Cloudflare's DNS provider and makes the DNS queries encrypted so nobody can snoop on the DNS queries. It does however install a VPN profile on iOS, but it's not actually a VPN
Zack Bloom
@a_sky 1.1.1.1 will always be free. Cloudflare is supported by website owners who are looking for better performance and security, 1.1.1.1 is a service to the community and a way to make the sites which use our authoritative DNS just a tiny bit faster than they would otherwise be. (That doesn't mean we intentionally prioritize them, it's just a side effect of our authoritative resolvers running on the same machines).
Primer
Just installed this. Not 100% sure what it is... is it a vpn basically?
Mohd Irtefa
@mickc79 👋🏽The 1.1.1.1 app is not a VPN. A traditional VPN would proxy all of your traffic however, the 1.1.1.1 app only secures your DNS queries and points them to 1.1.1.1 (privacy-first resolver which also happens to be the fastest public resolver in the world).
Alexi Tanguay
What's the benefit for CloudFlare doing this for free? Recognition in the industry?
Scott Robertson
@alexitanguay I suspect they will learn about routing, and the fasted routes etc so that they can optimise their network.
pierreneter
Is this DNS Queries over HTTPS (https://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc8484)?
Mohd Irtefa
@pierreneter The app allows both DNS over HTTPS and DNS over TLS.

I downloaded the app and tried to use it's VPN, tried to open some blocked websites but they weren't opened.

Pros:

small app size, understandable UI

Cons:

VPN doesn't really seem working, no way to choose the country

Babken Karapetyan
Great, if it is really protect my privacy
Ettore Tortora
@babken_karapetyan It doesn't. You should use a real VPN if you care about privacy. This just changes the DNS, allowing you to access blocked websites (not even all of them apparently).

privacy is always valuable to me as an Internet user
