This web version of 500 miles is really neat. Find out a ton of information about tech companies to help you choose one that you think is a good fit for you if you're looking for a job. If you're not, you'll still find this to be a valuable resource to do research on companies you are interested in digging into. I use this weekly and I'm never looking for a job!
I am upvoting it because I think appealing to this niche jobseeker is a dead red (on the nose) idea. I agree with BJ, though, that the lack of a search or filter function by job title or talent is lacking. Also the algo seems to only pull from Indeed. What about Dice, or Tech Target Jobs?
@mktackabery Thanks for your feedback. We agree there's more to to in terms of expanding coverage of jobs. Having said that, there are already over 200K open jobs in the system to discover, evaluate and apply.
One of my favorite features of the 500 Miles web app is the ability to bookmark companies as favorites. This enables me to build a comprehensive list of the companies I'm interested in and quickly view lots of insights about them. I also like that I can unfavorite companies as my interests change and that my favorites inform the recommendations 500 Miles gives me. Favorites can be accessed in the bottom of the left sidebar.
Additionally, being able to see my alumni connections at companies is helpful. It's interesting to see who works where and this would be huge if I needed a referral.
Looks like a great resource. However at first glance I don't see how this is built with the job seekers in mind? Every job seeker will have a certain talent set and looking for a specific title or position, yet there isn't an option to search these? The job seeker is left to searching through each company individually, which ultimately could be done on the companies own website. That being said there are some incredible resources found on each of the company profiles. With slight improvements to the user experience this could be a powerful resource.
@seointern BJ, that's right. On the web currently, this is a discovery tool. We will expand this to include a profile & preferences option for job seekers so we can use our machine learning recommender system to find the opportunities with perfect fit. This currently exists already in our mobile apps that you can download and check out. http://ios.500miles.io & http://android.500miles.io
This is Viral, co-founder and maker of 500 Miles. I co-founded a company with @muralisa to build a platform that helps young professionals discover companies at the cusp of breaking out into successful organizations, and get hired by them. The product uses a deep analytics and machine learning platform to develop key insights based on unbiased information about companies and help find employers that are a great fit for each candidate. Whether you are a fresh graduate, an experienced professional or a mid-career professional looking to switch careers, 500 Miles will help you discover, evaluate and find opportunities that are right for you. Would love to hear your thoughts and feedback.
If you care about gender diversity in the tech industry, we have analyzed that information for 800+ tech companies. Check out our leaderboard here and the app if you'd like to see some great recruiting related insights. http://blog.500miles.io/2015/10/...
A good port of the mobile 500 Miles app. Would like to see a 'New Grad' Stack and clearer indications of how suggestions are brought to me (example: 'You showed interest in Lyft, ridesharing startup, have you checked out its competitor, Uber?').
Congrats on the launch! Love the visualization of hires and departures: it paints a more insightful -- and balanced -- picture than what you find on the LinkedIn company page.
Interesting point @dtunkelang. This increases transparency and means companies may have to be more honest in their recruiting spiels. It also allows company performance to do the talking.
@dtunkelang Agreed. We also think there's a connection between a company's culture and its ability to retain top talent. Here's a blog post on that: http://blog.500miles.io/2015/10/...
Very sleek and digestible! Congrats Viral and team. Allow me to share these stacks or pages on Twitter, LinkedIn or Facebook. Good way to introduce a company to a job seeker.
500 Miles is disrupting the way a traditional job search is done. I really love how they tie it in your alma mater to see where your classmates landed and can interact with them directly. Big data is the future and Viral and team are ahead of the curve. Excited to see them continue to grow!
@saqi_mehta Thanks Saqi. Appreciate your feedback - especially considering your deep expertise in all areas related to recruiting at companies like Square that attract the best talent.
