AirBar — Connect to your AirPods in a click

Featured
72

I use my AirPods with my iPhone and Mac extensively but was always disappointed that the "seamless switching" would not automatically pick the audio source to use with my AirPods. To ease the pain of manually switching bluetooth devices on Mac I created this small utility to allow to force connect to my AirPods on my Mac from a tap on the menubar.

Hey 👋 AirBar was a challenge / weekend project for myself to build & launch a product in less than 12 hours. The idea was to... 1. Find something to improve on from my personal experience 2. Build & ship in 12h or less. Hope this is useful to someone else as well!

@tiivik How about making this work with android also in similar fashion? :)
Praval Singh
@tiivik Looks like it doesn't support versions below 10.14, and I see that folks who've upgraded to Mojave are also experiencing issues. Can you put up an update on this? Thanks and best wishes!
Armen Mkrtchian
Hi @tiivik Are you aware of this issue? I get this message on my MacBook Pro `You have macOS 10.13.6. The application requires macOS 10.14 or later.`

You click and activate your AirPods. It's free. It works.

Nothing more to say.

Pros:

Brilliant - and free.

Cons:

It's free. What con could there possibly be?

This should be built into MacOS. Nice work, @tiivik.

@rrhoover Appreciate it Ryan! Hope it will be soon enough (and AirBar won't be needed anymore 😢 😸 )
Thibaut
@tiivik @rrhoover It's already. Enable sound shortcut in menu bar in sound settings, and AirPods will be there and you can switch between AirPods and Speakers. :)
Laurens
@tiivik @rrhoover agreeeeeee!

@tiivik @rrhoover @thlbaut Not really. You still have to connect it via the Bluetooth menu so the AirPods switch from your iPhone to your Mac.
Thibaut
@tiivik @rrhoover @aisleone Nope, with continuity you don't have to do it ! You have to wait few seconds before the AirPods appearance.

As opposed to two-clicks?
John Peele
@joshuapinter Haha, I thought the same thing, this is the method I currently use. Also cool, my initials are JP and I named my airpods the same thing 😂
Joshua Pinter
@johnwpeele Ha! You've got good taste. Unfortunately, my mother, brother and sister all have the initials "JP" so the Bluetooth menu can be super confusing at family reunions. :)

Love it

Pros:

Works like magic

Cons:

Could also work with other bluetooth headphones

Chris Buttenham
I was just seething about this the other day. Looking forward to trying it out. Thanks for making it!

This sounds awesome, but I can't seem to get it to work. I'm on 10.14. It launched, shows up in the menu bar, then goes away after a few seconds.
Jean K. Villalobos
@aisleone any fix for this?
Adam DePasqua
Man, I want to love it, but every time I install it shows up and disappears. Tried to reach out for support but no luck. 😕

You click the button and your AirPods instantly connect

Pros:

Works as explained and free

Cons:

App doesn't always show in the top bar

Eddie Misicka

The ease of knowing if you're connected without having to open the bluetooth menu is great. The single click to connect is just the added bonus.

Pros:

Quick glance to see if airpods are connected

Cons:

No option to open on start up.

Apple needs to build this into control center on iOS.

@andrewwarner @westerwitten Where is this? I can't find it..latest iOS, iPhone 8. I built an automator app for the Mac that does what AirBar does, but I want the same thing on the phone. I switch back and forth a LOT.
Douglas Bonneville
@andrewwarner @westerwitten i found it...you have to go into the audio card "Music" then click the device picker (concentric circles / triangle icon). Still buried but better than having to open bluetooth settings. This should be surfaced directly on control center as an option (audio source).

?makers - Does not seem to work properly on 11.2.3 - icon disappears from menu bar when clicking on it?
matthewmurray
I love the concept but when I launch the app on new MBA on MacOS 10.14.1 it loads the menu bar for about three seconds and then closes. Nothing happens with my AirPods.
Chris Frantz
Crashes as soon as I click it with the pinwheel of doom. I want to love this.
Juan Buis
this is kind of like ToothFairy but free!
Paul Michaels
Hi, and thanks for this. This app is crashing when I run it. I am using Mac OS 10.14... Any suggestions?
MORPHINE
Only 10.14 😞
Haig Nalbandian
@photomorphine @laurens_laudowicz Not always possible if it's a business machine ;)

What’s the point on making an product which doesn’t support the latest macOS, I think enough people claimed an update ! Wake up
