Going to need someone to explain the reason behind all of these food delivery services popping up, some even charging for delivery (Amazon's is clearly free like others). I've been getting my food delivered from pretty much every restaurant in NYC for free for the past 10 years via Seamless.
If it's a nicer eatery that doesn't deliver, odds are I'd probbaly rather be served their food in their restaurant rather than out of a tin foil to-go tray in my home
@kristofertm NYC is a special case. The distance between restaurants and homes is usually close. For cities like Los Angeles, delivery can be nightmare with long waiting time and limited selections. Plus, the growth of local driver network makes the delivery prices drop by a significant percent.
@kristofertm Although they say NYC, most of them only deliver in Manhattan (and below 125th street). The whole delivery area is not more than 30 minutes end-to-end I believe.
@kristofertm you haven't seen anything yet - wait until you see how the food del apps works over here in China.. every food place on there inc KFC ( they charge 9rmb for del most expensive del ever! until you realise its only $1.34usd lols greedy fkn pigs eh! all others are free or only 3-4rmb 59cents usd for del ) everyone is on the app but just not maccas, they have their own del app. You can get two turkish rolls and a dish of turkish meat and rice del for $2.40usd. for example. plus the apps have specials where they pay for discounts, so a 10" pizza & two bags of chicken popcorn del for $5.08 usd and if you order over 60rmb the app gives you a discount of 45-50% etc off your meal.. same app also used by hotels for booking a stay over, spas, movie tickets you name it. in my apartment building you'll see the del guys from ( 6pm to 9pm ) every few mins come in with orders on their ebikes..
@kristofertm ps: i wouldn't be able to live here in china without these food del apps, there's no way i'd find all these restaurants to eat dinner at every night... not just food either, fruit n vegs, beer n wines, entire apps are in chinese though so i order by pix and cross my fingers the order food looks half as good as the photos, the smaller places mostly BLOODY LIE and my puppy gets a good feed instead :( lying bloody fkrs!.. you order what looks like a good american BBQ spare ribs and you get del this uneatable half ich ribs all chopped up with barely any meat on them.. so yeah the apps have now blocked my words 'puppy, dog, crap, four legged friend, k9 etc from my food reviews, bastards! I'm running out of ways to explain dog food.. any hints please guys?
Whilst not available in the UK, I wonder how this would impact other food delivery companies like Just Eat, Deliveroo etc, especially as Amazon is such a big name.
Because restaurant delivery is such low margin service offering, a diversified biz like Amazon has a natural advantage over "delivery only" and "restaurant delivery only" companies, provided they can scale quickly and leverage the data that's gathered to grow other biz units. Definitely worth testing at a large scale IMHO.
This has been active in Seattle for a really long time.
How it works: Amazon asks the restaurant to prepare the food then Amazon Prime will send a guy to pick your food from restaurant and then deliver your food to you.
The best part in Seattle is that it offers delivery to lot of restaurant which don't generally have a delivery service. Also the delivery is free for now.
In Oslo I use Foodora regularly. Normally I get my food within 40 minutes. It's going to be interesting to see how they would compete. I guess they'll get access to the same restaurants, delivery the same way (bicycle) and have similar user-friendly apps. Probably in the end it would boil down to price and in the past Amazon has been known to be crushing competition head-to-head battles on price.
I recently tweeted that I was looking for a list of the food delivery apps so I don't have to pay for another meal in SF. Amazon is offering $10 off first order and Chubby Noodle only costs $9/dish 😋
But if you seriously want your life funded by generous VCs, check out VCFML, shown to me by @benln.
It looks like a very interesting product, and it's a serious contender in the massively crowded food delivery market with UberEats, Postmates, Zomato, DoorDash, etc. It's a serious contender because of the efficiency of logistics operations at Amazon. So, keep an eye on it.
By my estimation it will be 1.5 years before its in the UK and only in London (typical Amazon UK launch) and a further 5 years before its fully UK wide.
Have tried it. Was enticed by the free offer of food. Their selection is currently pretty bad, which makes me think they're aren't negotiating nicely with their vendors. Tons of potential for this, but right now it's on the bottom of the list behind Caviar, Postmates, DoorDash, etc
@mlsj1@angelo_liao The verdict is still out on on-demand food delivery winners. It's very hard to compete and build a sustainable business without the volume.
