I was surprised to find that wifi and these other features weren't included in the actual device. This plus the main device = $300, seems quite a lot for a lock to me

In addition to letting you access the lock via wifi (to buzz in delivery/service people, etc.), Connect will allow other devices to interact with August's Smart Lock. SmartThings, Nest, and Logitech Harmony are all on board.
