Not to be a Debbie downer, but I got automatic early, and I've had it since -- as a product, it's about as dissatisfying as backing a hardware product on kickstarter. Not here to bad mouth products, but it fails to deliver in just about every way. It has added little, if any, value to my automobile experience.
@pomajp Really sorry to hear that. I'd love to know where we fell short and see what we can do to fix it. Our goal with the Automatic App Gallery is to address the needs of a wide variety of drivers with 3rd party apps in addition to our own. We launched with about 20 but there are many more on the way. What would add value to your driving experience?
Great experience overall, and not sure if the new hardware addresses it somehow, but note this product (and other similar ones like Metromile) slowly trickle the battery since the OBD port wasn't meant for constant use, but for one-off, always powered, diagnostic purposes. Not a big deal if you drive your car regularly, but if it sits idle for a week at a time it might be an issue if you don't unplug it - learned this the hard way :)
Hi @eddie, you raise a good point and we've spent a lot of time optimizing how much current we draw when the car is idle. A car battery will drain if you don't drive it for a certain period of time even if you haven't plugged a device into the the OBD port. Of course, plugging in an OBD device makes the battery drain a little faster. Ultimately, it depends on the state of the battery. The older the battery, the sooner it will drain. Since we design and build our hardware device, we've optimized it to drain as little current as possible, and we rarely get that complaint from our customers.
As fate would have it, I'm picking up my first car today :)
Creating a digital platform for a car is a great idea, considering our driving habits can have a huge say in how we live our daily lives. I see a huge applicability of this tech in the insurance space. Congrats on the launch!
Thanks a lot @alirtariq! We completely agree. The potential to use software to make our cars more useful is still barely tapped. This is a good beginning.
Does this API support saving driving data into the Automatic database? I'm looking to build a system that sends / saves my driving data without using a bluetooth connection to a smartphone.
@diplateevo Not at the moment. Writing to the REST API is limited to marking a trip as business. We're looking to expand write capabilities, but adding whole trips from another source is a ways off.
HI. Have enjoyed my first gen automatic and the app interactions with IF - though people didn't enjoy my car facbooking it's gas milage on Facebook so much, but that was my fault.
What's new in the hardware, it's not clear on the website, and is there an upgrade for current owners?
FYI, automatic was very helpful when we were camping I had a breakdown- I was able to call my local mechanic with the error code, who found the closest repair shop around. They were able to have the part waiting and repair the fault same day. It saved hours of time for sure.
@duanewilsonsf it's great to hear that Automatic helped you when your car broke down.
You can find more information about the new hardware here - https://www.automatic.com/adapter/
You must have received an email with upgrade details for existing customers. Please write to support@automatic.com if you have any questions.
Thanks for being an Automatic user!
@scorinth this page has more information and tech specs of the gen 2 adapter - https://www.automatic.com/adapter/
The summary of what's new in gen 2 is:
- It comes with GPS built-in
- It is MFi certified, which improves Bluetooth connectivity and speed on iPhones.
- It supports multiple simultaneous Bluetooth connections which enable support for apps like DashCommand and Harry's LapTimer.
- It has more memory and processing power.
- It has an improved connector which is compatible with more cars.
- Many other small improvements.
@helloduane It looks like checking the Fuel Level may have been removed from the V2 adapter as well. :( I found the info buried in the Car Compatibility notes for my model. @thejo
I feel like we're mere months away from the big announcement that Boston Dynamics and Automatic are launching the first autonomous driving conversion kit with your own robotic chauffeur. Powered by Automatic.
Hello,
I sent a message through the support page, but haven't heard back yet. If I order an Automatic today, will I be getting the new version adapter? Just making sure before putting my order in. I am in the automotive business so would like to look into making an app for this.
Thanks!
@joedandachli Sorry for the delay in getting back to you we're still catching up on all the launch day email. But yes, anyone who orders at store.automatic.com today, yesterday, (and even a few days ago) will get a 2nd generation adapter.
Love this. I'm using the 3G Pro adapter, and have been tracing our family's cars for over a year now. Very helpful to see driving habits, get Check Engine Light alerts, and especially look at the CO2 impact we have. Thank you @thejo and team for a great product and service.
I've loved my gen 1 product, and ordered the new version right away. Love that the price remained the same even though the functionality is greatly increased. Great job on the release and looking forward to using the new model!
Hi Thejo!
I can help you to sale and distribute your product in LATAM if you are interested.
Let me know.
