Looks like you've narrowed Brew's focus a ton since we last spoke, @jijosunny. Why did you choose to prioritize podcast creators vs. something else?
Jijo Sunny
@rrhoover With Brew, we are focusing on indie creators and trying to solve their most important problem, which is monetization. Interestingly, podcasts are the least monetized content type (<$500m last year, mostly ads), and yet the most monetizable (nearly half of top 25 creators on Patreon are podcasters). Seemed like a good place to start. :)

This is awesome. Congrats on yet another killer product launch. As an *aspiring* podcaster, it's awesome to see new ways for creators to earn and focus on what they're best at! Good luck! P.S. I love WhatRuns and use it regularly, thanks for making it!

Hey @jijosunny, could you expand a bit on how you're dividing money between creators? Is it based on listen time? And what about creators who haven't signed up for Brew; can they retroactively claim their share if people listen to their show in the app? Thanks!
Dave Zohrob
@jijosunny @layon_overwhale I love the idea of compensating creators more from their work! I would love to hear more about this — your FAQ implies that the $4.99/mo goes to *all* creators, not just Brew Originals. As a podcaster I have a few questions: - If someone listens to my show on your app, are you collecting money for me? - Do I have to go through a process to "claim" my earnings? If not, how do I get the money? - If so, what happens to podcasts that don't go through that process? - If I upload something exclusive to Brew, can I also e.g. publish it on my private Patreon feed? Thanks! Always glad to see more folks trying new angles on helping creators.
Jijo Sunny
@layon_overwhale @dzohrob Hey Leon, it is currently based on unique listens (30 seconds+ retention to count as a valid listen), but we have some ideas to make it more meaningful and fair. Currently we see a range of 5-10 cents per listen ($50-$100 CPM). Will talk more about it late this month when we have some concrete data. We are very transparent with our business model in our creator dashboard. Please sign up as a creator (requires verification from our end, won't take more than 48 hours) to get access to the dashboard. Dave, first off, great to connect - we found your take on the podcasting space very insightful. - We are not atm. Brew is only collecting money on behalf of the creators who are on Brew. This might change in the future but we have to work on the dynamics then. As of today, almost all of the paid subscribers are referred by the creators on Brew. We don't promote the app. Creators drive the fans. - Yes, the process is very straightforward and open to all creators. Creators get full access to the listening stats and revenues. - This process is to verify the ownership of existing podcasts. It is not an approval process. Brew will always remain open to all creators, regardless of the audience size or content. - Yes, you can. It is up to the creators to determine the exclusivity of their show on Brew. Exclusivity helps drive more of your fans to Brew and help generate more income. However, this is very much your call. We've been talking to some established creators and they were more interested in publishing their extras and uncut on Brew (for their superfans) and keep doing what they do. At the end of the day, Brew is a new monetization platform for creators - it is up to them to decide what value they should provide to drive their fans to Brew.

Congrats on yet another successful launch, @jijosunny! Do you mind sharing how exactly do you distribute subscription revenue between creators and what's your cut? Thanks and best of luck!
Jijo Sunny
@igoruphere not at all. I've prepared a notion doc to explain more about it here - https://www.notion.so/brewapp/Br.... I'll keep it updated and add them to the site. thanks!

Supporting the creators is the biggest pro of this app
Jijo Sunny
@ajay_aravind I agree - can't think of a more powerful reason to pay for something :)
Gehrig
Nice work, getting more money into the hands of creators is always a good thing. Curious, @jijosunny have you considered using cryptocurrency for users to tip the creators directly? This could enable users to tip small amounts for a particular episode they enjoy.
Jijo Sunny
@gehrigkunz thanks Gehrig! since you asked, tipping and merch is on our secret roadmap (🤫). We're looking at all the different ways to monetize audio content. Easiest way to do that is by building something that consumers would *love* and pay for.
Jijo Sunny
Thanks for hunting, @katmanalac! Hey everyone 👋 Brew.com is a podcast app that lets creators publish exclusive content and monetize. Users get access to exclusive content + all the free podcasts that’s available elsewhere - https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/... Let us know what you think about the app! :)

Looks like this will become the Netflix for podcast. Class app. Wonderful domain and awesome work!
Jijo Sunny
@ajay_c_thomas thanks Ajay!
abasa aka pfazer
heavy podcast listener. HEAVY. Listing as we speak. I want to support some creators. Other creators are running ads and seem to be doing just fine. I can't see myself changing my behavior and ditching my current native free iOS podcast app, spending over an hour to find and add all of my podcasts to your app, signing up to your app and giving you my data AND paying you $5/month. Dont see it at all. Would you pay an extra $5/month for Netflix if they said that they would give 100% of that to the creators? Why not charge nothing, sell our data, and give the proceeds to creators instead? I wish you all the best of luck (and I upvoted to prove it!), as I know how difficult it is to design, build, and ship beautiful software. But in this case I just don't see it.
Jijo Sunny
@abasa hey abasa, really appreciate your candid feedback. We built Brew to help creators earn a living doing what they love. We don't promote the app, creators do. As they get paid per listen. Here's Jack Vale talking about his podcast and encouraging his fans to check it out on Brew - https://www.facebook.com/officia.... At BuyMeACoffee.com we've seen first hand how people are willing to support the creators. We are a fan of all the business models out there that helps creators get paid (including and especially ads), but the only way to enable millions of creators is to get people to pay for good content :)
Al Boulley
@abasa Oh my gosh, a whole hour of your time?! Gasp, how can any business in this day & age expect people to actually put forth effort towards something they enjoy? The gall of some makers. I can't see people doing much more than using one free app to access thousands of free content sources. Why don't all makers just give us what we want for free, then collect every shred of monetizable data from our behavior, and sell that to the highest bidders—like Google, Facebook, Twitter, etc. That's the smart play, right Abasa? Seriously though, your Netflix analogy is wholly incompatible and myopic. In other words, "you just don't see" that it's a terrible analogy which further erodes whatever point you were hoping to previously state but didn't. What you could do… is use Brew only for those creators you deign worthy enough (and needy enough) of your precious $5/month. How long would it take to find and add all those podcasts to their app, 8 minutes? Oh, you can't be bothered to use 2 separate podcast apps, am I right? Based on your attitude and suggestions, I just don't see you devoting the effort it would take to ensure "some creators" get your support. I wish you all the best of luck (and commented to prove it!), as I know how difficult it is to find, consume, and reward ad-free content. But in your case, I just don't see it.
Sam McAllister
Big fan of this revenue model. Best of luck!
Jijo Sunny
@sammcallister thanks Sam! we're super confident too (and even more flexible to do whatever it takes to make this work :) )

Jijo and his team are amazing executers- I'm so excited to see this launch and I can't believe how impressive a product they have delivered after only a few months of iteration. Really looking forward to seeing this product evolve over time with that mission in mind!

Pros:

Beautiful design and interface. A platform that aims to support creators.

Cons:

None!
