If only I could keep my plants alive

@rrhoover There are plants that are better without human interaction haha, Snake plants are one of them, they're harmful to pets tho, so take care! https://www.google.com/search?q=... What your problem taking care of plants? Did you ever tried and failed? (that's normal, so don't feel bad) what went wrong?
Thomas Leitermann
@rrhoover + @victor_ribero - that sentiment was why I once explored the "houseplant school" product idea. Goal was to help people learn to read their plants so they know how to treat them well. Some leftovers are still online: on instagram - https://www.instagram.com/housep... and a first try at a course to learn to read your Monstera Deliciosa - https://houseplantschool.carrd.co/ (optimized for mobile screen sizes). Was a fun & very interesting project, but ultimately people were not willing to pay just for the advice...
Victor Ribero
@rrhoover @thomasleiterman I think the idea is cool, but at the end, there are 2 roads: - you like plants, and you'll investigate and read blogs about it. (you'll fail and kill plants OFC, everyone does, but you'll keep going) - you like plants, but you don't want to spend time, you just want to buy as a furniture because they look great. Both roles are okay, but people must know that there are plants that require a lot of attention are you better be willing to spend that time to understand. (in this hectic society that we want everything with instant gratification, is a good way to combat this). In the end, most of the problems can be solved by applying Pareto's law with plants: - A light as bright as possible - Is better to underwater than overwater - Above-average humidity is better, plants do not well in dry environments - During winter reduce the amount of water - Before user fertilizer, know which one is best (if it's a slow grower you can't give as much to other plants because its roots will burn)
Thomas Leitermann
@victor_ribero the idea came out of quite extensive user research. What most people struggle with is taking good care of their plants. From the understanding we had built up that was mostly due not knowing some basics and also not knowing what "wrong"/"bad" looks like. Our hope was that there would be an opening for an "easy-to-learn-to-take-care" thing that both groups would be interested in. And there was quite some interest, the ad conversion rates & engagement was great (as can be seen here) - its just nobody wanted to pay for "just" that. And as much as I like the very slick style of the information you present on ChooseYourPlant I'm not 100% onboard with some of the generalistic info there. So so much depends on the setting. Main takeaway out of our endevaour was that its much more about the system the plants are in than the plants itself. And just a "water reminder app" is NOT what good plant care needs..
Victor Ribero
@thomasleiterman I like so much your points. Indeed the setup / environment is always everything. I'm planning to really create great content Thomas! I'm working on this alone and I'm doing it as a side-project, but I'm planning to add (I don't know yet how I'm going to prioritize it, buy I'm planning to add: - how to propagate the plant - how to trim the plant - common health issues (pests) - talk about the root system - characteristics of the leaves (only for some will make sense I think) Do you think that would help? Do you think it would be interesting to add more information? thank you for the feedback!
Alican Vergin
Looking great Victor! And also your timing couldn't have been better for me, as I was just considering to get a houseplant 😃 Have you considered adding trees and other garden plants for the yard?
Victor Ribero
@alicanvergin wowww I'm glad to hear that! Did you have anything in mind? Is it going to be your first plant or you already have a few? You did such a good point! ATM I was focusing on indoor plants to be "more niche" but in long term I wouldn't say no. The software is prepared for exterior plants ^^ So kno hows! I also had to idea of doing urban orchard, aromatic plants, or herbs for natural medicine! Do you need help choosing the plant? do you want to contract opinions or something? We can chat 😀!
Alican Vergin
@victor_ribero At the moment, I have nothing in mind, and it's going to be my first plant. I'll definitely use your site in deciding what to get. Thanks a lot for your support! I'll join your slack channel.
Victor Ribero
@alicanvergin if you need anything feel free to DM me or ask on any of the channels!

@tomasmax Thank you so much! There's still a lot of things to add and to improve, but overall I'm super happy with the idea and the result
Guilherme Rizzo
Love it! Great work on it, Victor! My favorite one is Monstera Deliciosaaa 😋
Victor Ribero
@gvrizzo Yes I know it! If we see each other again, I'm going to give you one! haha but traveling that much... you're going to kill it hahah
Emma Bostian
This is such a great idea Victor!!
Victor Ribero
Thank you so much @emma_bostian!! The idea behind this is to connect as many people as possible, help people and build green houses around the world! I believe you must start having environment caring and removing stress to be better people, this is going to help!
Okii Eli
looking good! Well done
Victor Ribero
@nextstevejob Thank you so much Okii! Do you have plants at home? ^^

Correct your latin names, the specie name is not spelled with uppercase first letter, as any plant lover should know.
Victor Ribero
@nomadbynature thank you so much for the feedback! that's something I'm working on. I never said I'm a plant expert. I just try to share what I learn and things I read. I'll read about it and I'll tryy to fix it as soon as possible! Did you see anything else I could improve? I would love to hear from you since you look like you know about plants more than me! Thank you :)

Hi there to everyone my name is Victor 👋! Today I launch the first iteration of ChooseYourPlant with a lot of emotion, passion, and love. I came to launch a worldwide community for houseplant lovers 🌱. I made everything by myself so I'm super excited to receive honest feedback from all of you. I want to make ChooseYourPlant the community I never had when I started loving plants 😀. I've spent a lot of time (and I still do haha) researching on Google for plant guides or scrolling on Instagram or Pinterest trying to find plants I like. I made this community to: - 🌱 Discover new plants you love in an instant. - 🤓 Learn how to take care of them (light, water, soil, fertilizer, tips, etc). - 📺 Watch video tutorials from the community - 📸 Share images of your plants with everyone. - 🍀 See plants that look similar or with the same specifications. - 🛒 Buy plants from trusty retailers recommended by the community. ChooseYourPlant has over 50+ 🌱plants to discover (I know it's not a lot, but I collect all the information manually because I like to learn while I'm doing it). Each plant has a guide with many 📸 images and 📺 videos to learn how to care for it. - 👎 Other websites or online retailers only have the plants they sell (maximum 20-30), and some that don’t have care guides. - 👍 ChooseYourPlant doesn't have this limitation and I intend to have over 200 plants at the end of 2020 (because we don’t have any stock or sell any plants directly, we use links to other websites so it could be even beneficial for them) and will continue adding plants without hesitation. To find plants that you love and can keep happy in an instant, you can use the diverse filters we have that allow you to outline your needs. - 😃 Are you new to the hobby? Go for easy plants! - 🌥️ You don't have a house with a lot of light? No worries - select low light. - 😺 Do you have children or pets? Make sure the plants are safe for cats, dogs, and children. - 🎒 Do you travel often? You may want to search by drought-tolerant plants. - 🎨 Do you want to have colorful plants? Search plants by leaves with more than one color. - 🖥️ Do you want to bring life to your office? See our recommendations for many spaces! - 😏 And a lot more! To quickly gain a better understanding of the plant, I added a “summary” section where you can see what features and characteristics each plant has in a card format. - ☀️ How much light does it need to grow? - 💦 How often should I water my plant? - 🍀 How big are the leaves? - 📏 How big can the plant get overtime? - 🔴 Does it have one color or more? - 🏡 Is it recommended for a particular space? Each plant has many 📸 images so people can see how the plant grows in different environments. For example, in low light conditions, the leaves become darker and with bright light, they have more vibrant colors. The separations between leaves or the height of the plant are also affected by light exposure. High-quality images are a must so people can better appreciate the color, texture, etc. As a plant lover, I find it interesting to read about the environmental conditions the plant has in nature, or its characteristics because it gives us a lot of information about the conditions it needs to grow healthy and gives a higher probability of success. Plants are known by different names: scientific, botanical, Latin, and sometimes many common names. It's useful to know some of its names because not all plant shops use the same name for the plants, some will use the botanical, others use just the common names, and so on. For example, there’s a beautiful plant that usually hangs and the leaves are a heart shape. This plant is called “Ceropegia Woodi” but almost no one calls it this, most people know it as “string of hearts”, but it is also known as: - Chain of hearts - Hearts entangled - Rosary vine - Sweetheart vine You can buy the plant you liked from a trusty online seller recommended by the community 🛒. I’ve spoken to a lot of people about where they buy plants from if they would repeat or not, and what shops they had bad experiences with (delays, bad quality of the plant, stressed plant, etc). You’ve discovered one or many plants you like. Now what? Everyone kills plants, even experts, so don’t punish yourself about it if you do, but you should do your best to keep those plants happy. Do you have questions like: - Can this plant survive in low-light conditions? Does it need bright light? - Can I stop watering this plant? Is it harmful to water it too much? - Do I need to buy a humidifier? - Can I have it next to the window? - How often should I fertilize this plant? - Is it toxic to my pets or children? ChooseYourPlant teaches you how to take care of the plant and explains the most important things to ensure that your plant grows strong and happy because it explains to you: - ☀️ How much light your plant needs - 💦 When you should water it - 🌫️ The room humidity levels the plant needs - ⛰️ How to fertilize the plant and which one to use - 😀 Useful and funny tips so you can experiment ChooseYourPlant also has video tutorials made by the community for the community if you prefer video content, so you can learn how to care for any plant however you want. Maybe you liked the way a plant looks but you can’t take care of it? ChooseYourPlant shows you plants that look similar. On the other hand, if you managed to keep a certain plant happy for a while, you might want to get plants that need similar attention! I want to make this a real community where everyone's voice has value. - Do you know an e-commerce store that has this plant? Tell us! - Give us feedback! We’d love to see what you have to say. - Share your images with us. We also have a shortlist of blogs we recommend to learn about plants, best practices, type of soil, what kind of light plants need, and more! You can contact me if you know blogs that are not on the list that people might be interested in! ChooseYourPlant has a Slack workspace with many channels to share your plants, give tips, ask for help, recommend shops/pots/materials to people, and more! There is not a lot of people because I created 4 days ago or so. _____________________________ So yes, it has a lot of things 🤪. I really hope you like it because I dedicated a lot of energy and put a lot of passion for it. I'd love to hear what you have to say so I can improve this project and in case you didn't like it, I'd like to talk about why not as well. It's a long term project and it’s ChooseYourPlant, my new baby ❤️. Thank you from the bottom of my heart 🙏
Fajar Siddiq
@victor_ribero Wow that's alot of screenshot over there. This is really interesting project that i see you do with plants. Talk to other ChooseYourPlant fans and friends too! (wish plants could talk to us, jk) Also which plants works best at my home, taking care of nature is much needed. Congratulations on the launch!!! wish you supper success! 🌴🌲🌳💚
Victor Ribero
@fajarsiddiq First of all thank you so much for the great feedback!! I do believe every time people notice how benefits plants give us!
Ryzal Yusoff 🇬🇧🇲🇾
@victor_ribero Great community site idea! Right timing as well right now, as most people need to stay home, so bringing greens inside their own home is a great idea. Love the minimal design of the website too. Just one suggestion, maybe allowing users to leave feedback/comment/discussion on the plant's page will be a great feature to add :)
Victor Ribero
You're so right about these are difficult times @ryzalyusoff ! And our pets🐱 and plants🌱 can make our life easier and more happy 😀! I agree on that! I think it would be super useful to review plants and rate them! I still ahve to think about how to do it, but it will definetely give value to new users, and the less experimented. Such a great poin 😀t!
Victor Ribero
Thank you so muchhh @anthilemoon!! I'll be waiting for your plants once you get them 🤗!
David Barneda
Looks great! Keep up the good work Victor.

Joan Claret
Great job mate! looks amazing
Victor Ribero
@joanvan Thank you so much! Would you improve the application somehow? Maybe more information to plants? What would it be useful for you to keep a plant alive?
Kamal Mahmud
this is pretty good! I finally will be able to get that plant on my desk
Victor Ribero
@kamalhm ohh perfect!! plants help to release a lot of stress and give a lot of love! I encourage you to join the community and say hi 👇! Ask whatever questions you have! https://join.slack.com/t/choosey...

Victor Ribero
Thank you @new_user_333abaeb68 !!! I hope it helps! What are you most common searched plants? What are the ones you love? What are your issues when caring them? May I help you somehow?
Harvey Hodd
I love the slack group! Love the focus on community.
Victor Ribero
@harveyhodd I know it takes a lot of time, but I think lot of people will love it, since with their phones they can just share images of whatever they want instantly! In addition, having a slack workdspace allows me to do not prioritize user sessions yet, and focus on the content!
Jess Tan
Wow can I upvote twice?! Absolutely love the UI,UX of the site! I've been deliberating getting a plant for months now. With this resource it got me excited again and I might be getting one soon! Thank you for this great product!
Victor Ribero
@jesstan ohhh what a great feedback!! Thank you so much! I wanted to keep the UI clean, focus and focus on UX to make the proccess as simple as possible! To understand your case better, why you didn't have you before? lazy? afraid of killing it? indecision of what plant to take? I'm super open-minded for feedback! I'd like to know more about your case so I can help you choose a plant or give you some recommendations if you like!
Jess Tan
@victor_ribero Hey Victor! It is all of the above haha! 😂 I was very indecisive about the plant I wanted, and when I finally decide on one it turns out that its super high maintenance and decided against it. This is where I find the alternatives/suggestion feature of ChooseYourPlant very helpful, I could choose something based on the care level that I could commit to, and at the same time discover plants that I never knew :)
Victor Ribero
@jesstan I love that you find the push you needed to have plants again! feel free to joun our FREE community on Slack and ask as many questions as you want. If you don't feel shy, you can even do a presentation and what your issue is! I offer myself too for resolving all those questions you might have! 👇👇 https://join.slack.com/t/choosey...
Victor Ribero
@ninja_team thank you so much! to all you Ninja team I guess haha
Marie
Oh I love the UX and the slack community! Hope this project will flourish <3
Victor Ribero

Marie
@victor_ribero I think everything is great, although I'd add a frequency of watering into the description. it's a good thing for beginners to understand – checking the soil was not so easy for me when I was a newbie but I knew that my zamioculcas can stand 2 weeks w/o water while tradescantia thrives in moisture :) also I wish you luck with growing the list of plants! it really is important
Victor Ribero
@marie_dostoewskaya I couldn't agree more! It's super important to keep adding plants to the list! About what you said relaetd to the watering, that's true. I guess it's difficult to standarize the watering frequency because it depends on the light as well and the pot, but really good point!
Karina Zheliznyk
I absolutely love the UI of the site!
Victor Ribero
@karina_zhel ohh... I appreciate it so much! I did a lot of iterations even though I haven't shared them! I'm working on this project alone, so I have to deal with design, development, social media, growth, SEO and more! Your words give me a lot of energy and motivation!! Thank you so much and I hope you're doing well :D
