Introducing CommonPlace - the new app for avid readers. Save reading passages with personalized annotations, connect with other readers, and host digital book clubs. Uncover the ideas within your next novel!
Hey Product Hunt community! I'm excited to introduce you to CommonPlace, the online reading app that's revolutionizing the way we read and connect with each other.
CommonPlace spawned from a personal experience in a philosophy book club with friends in which we encountered two issues
1. It is very time consuming to write down my favorite favorite reading excerpts with a personal annotation
2. There is no great resource to find targeted commentary on specific book passages
Using CommonPlace, readers can use their phone camera to quickly save a quote and add their personal annotation. The discover page for a title is the place to search for quotes / annotations by page #, dynamic tag (metaphor, foreshadow, discussion question, etc.), and much more.
Goodreads is the go to app for readers to find their next book, our aim is for CommonPlace is to be the platform readers use to enhance their experience WHILE reading a novel!
With CommonPlace, you can access a diverse range of books and connect with fellow readers through shared annotations and discussions. Our app is designed to provide a seamless reading experience while fostering meaningful connections and promoting literary conversations
We have a mobile app for iPhone owners and everyone can visit our website at https://commonplaceapp.com/!
We have lots of plans for future functionalities for the rest of this year but would love to hear feedback on our product as it is today - feel free to reach out to socialmedia@commonplaceapp.com if you have any questions, want to connect, etc.! @martenbooks@Dominic de Boer
@dominic@common_place hey product hunt community! I am a co-founder of Commonplace. Excited to see fellow readers on the app and posting their thoughts!
Another cool feature CommonPlace has that distinguishes us is the ability to cross reference quotes from other books easily. Most great books reference directly or indirectly other source materials, so the ability to cross reference in your annotations will hopefully bring out the connectivity of literature and display it in a viewable network for readers
@martenbooks@dominic@common_place hello product hunt! I am also a co-founder of CommonPlace and lead up the software engineering side of things. I wanted to give a run down of the features of the app so far:
Quotes
· Start by scanning the ISBN on your book or by typing it manually
· From there, leverage OCR technology to bring an excerpt into your phone and add your personal annotation
· Users are able to cross reference other quotes easily in their annotation via a hyperlink.
· Then type in the page number, make the post private or public, send the post to a group (bible study, Anthropology, etc) , and add a dynamic tag (details below)
Home Page
· Create a profile similar to Reddit/Twitter and follow your friends, family, and complete strangers
· The home feed will populate with the quotes and annotations from the profiles, books, and groups you choose to follow
· Upvote, downvote and jump in the replies to learn more about the ideas in books
· Save another reader's quote and annotation to your personal library
Groups
· Form a private or public digital book club, bible study, or classroom to see the group members reading notes in real time
Discover / Search
· Search for other users, public book clubs, or find a book's discover page
· Navigate to a book title's page and start typing out a quote to see the most upvoted annotation on that specific excerpt
· The book title page can also be searched for discussion questions and other dynamic tags (such as metaphor, foreshadow, etc.)
My Quotes
· This serves as the personal library of all your posts over time organized by book title
· The notifications tab on new followers, dislikes/likes, replies, groups invitations, etc.
· Your personal commonplace book - the namesake of our product that is an old, historical practice
We have a lot more planned even in just the coming weeks including a discussions functionality which will make the app even more socially interactive!
@dmitry_sytsevich What makes our product unique is that it serves readers while they are immersed in a book. There are already so many apps that provide book recommendations / ratings (notably Goodreads); but CommonPlace truly elevates a book by enabling readers to save excerpts while amidst a book title 📚
