Setting up and managing state tax accounts is something that every business that has employees will have to do, but there are two common use cases:
First, is an early stage company who is hiring their very first employee. Agent adds significant value at this stage since founders are going through this process for the very first time and have so many other things to focus on.
Second, is a company who is scaling a remote team. As the number of states where a company has employees increases (either because people are moving around or because they have just hired new employees in new states), the complexity of registering, tracking reporting deadlines, and keeping all of the accounts up-to-date and in compliance because a major administrative challenge.

I have signed up for 4 new states with middesk this year and it's been excellent. They also have virtual mailbox features (still the main way to hear from state tax agencies) and their support has been good. Highly recommend for remote hiring in the US.

Over the last two years, Middesk has grown from a team of less than 10 to about 40. We've supported many early stage companies, where compliance is managed by the founder. Many of these customers aren't aware of all the nuanced state-level requirements and are laser-focused on getting their business off-the-ground. We've helped them avoid having to think about state compliance and given them the flexibility to make dedicated compliance hires at a later date.
We've also supported many customers who have in-house payroll & compliance teams. For them, the value prop has been to consolidate their government accounts in 1 location and to save them hours per state that they can re-invest in other meaningful activities.
This is huge! This answers a significant problem I’ve ran into before trying to bring remote talent in from different states. What a pain it is to manage with all the government bodies.
