@dshan Hi Derek. Many competing products involve a lot steps before you can actually start talking to another party. Some even ask their users to type out the name of call (like "weekly-update-with-john-smith"), which isn't ideal for most scenarios. Our focus is delivering the simplest, most-seamless and beautiful video call experience.
I was going to comment and say "I wish I could also share my screen," since I use this kind of thing to do product demos on a daily basis, but they have that covered too, it appears, with a Chrome Extension.
Existing solutions that require an install are annoying. Join.me lets me share my screen without the other person needing a plugin, but still requires them to call a dial-in line to do voice chat, which can be annoying for some international locations, and also, because I need to guess in advance the right dial-in number to give the person.
This looks really promising, the only thing that seems to always be a blocker is that browsers have a scary confirmation dialog to enable the microphone. It's too bad this kind of thing isn't softer in situations where the permission is limited to a single visit.
@radiofreejohn Thanks for the encouraging comment.
Competing solutions typically require the presenter (and often the other participants as well) to download and install a full-on piece of software to facilitate the meeting. Imagine: 1.) spending minutes (sometimes many minutes) waiting for the download to complete, 2.) then going through the installation steps, 3.) then only to be disappointed by the sub-par UI/UX, 4.) and in some cases still have to figure the right dial-in and PIN for the voice conversation. In short, not the best experience.
With Room, our team's focused on delivering the simplest, most-seamless and beautiful video call experience. We will continue to focus our efforts in that direction.
@horatiol Thanks Horatio, I'm very familiar with the competition, I use them every day, and each one has a little detail that's just annoying enough, so far Room hasn't got any annoying details, and I look forward to trying it out in some real world demos soon.
So far the only (very minor) issue was after installing the chrome extension, the presentation mode didn't work automatically, when I added it, and clicked presentation it prompted me to add it again rather than going into presentation mode. I had to reload the page to get it to recognize the plugin (this isn't a surprise, but may not be obvious to first timers)
@radiofreejohn Thanks John. We are aware of it. It's a limitation with Chrome web browser. After the quick Chrome extension install, a page refresh is needed.
Hi everyone, I lead the product, Room. There are quite a few of us working on Room, so on behalf of the team here in San Francisco, thanks for hunting this and all of upvotes. We hope you like Room. Room's Twitter handle is @get_room. If you have questions, feel free to post or email me: horatio@room.co
@horatiol this looks really promising. I can't find anything about pricing, is that not something that you're doing yet, and are you likely to soon?
One thing I like about join.me is the ability to have a customized, static URL that I can share, and also to have permissions around who can join the particular room at any given time, do you have plans for anything like this, or does it already exist?
@radiofreejohn Room is free to use, and at the moment, I don't have anything to share regarding paid features. Regarding vanity URL's, the feature is on our list of potential features for consideration.
@horatiol thanks again Horatio. I used Room for a live demo just now and it worked great. I made a vanity room by just typing the name in :P I'd love to be able to have control over it though but I assume I was using the product in an unintended way so that's OK :)
Looks like a great product. I always enjoy seeing these sites get created- theres a few of them now, but each one keeps iterating on the past (Tinychat (holler!) , aim.com/av, appear.in, meetings.io, etc..)
@dbl Hi Daniel. Thanks for the positive feedback.
We are aware of other companies who are interested in the same space and very knowledgable of the space's past. Each of the companies have different executions (design, technology, marketing... and many others things). Put together, the many companies all serve very different experiences.
