@mikehorn curious what your grand master plans are? Do you see yourself expanding beyond coffee or is it a big enough market to keep you busy for the foreseeable future?
@rrhoover Hey Ryan. Coffee is a gigantic space ($71B globally). We started out as a subscription service. That business has gone well for us and we have a lot of happy customers. But what we've learned from our unique model--rather than roast coffee ourselves, we source from over 100 of the best independent coffee roasters in the country--is that there's a much bigger and more interesting play here. When you add up all the independent coffee roasters in the US, they actually sell >$1B in whole bean coffee every year just for drinking at home. When you add in office coffee and brewing equipment, it's a multi-billion dollar space. None of that is online. Independent coffee roasters will never have rails coders and ui/ux guys and growth people. It's just not their business. So we're building the online distribution channel for independent coffee roasters. We think people want great coffee that's not from an industrial factory. And we think people want to buy things online with convenience and a great product experience. That's what we're building.
@mikehorn That's brilliant. Quite different from what Pact Coffee are doing. Do these roasters get a site as part of your platform or is it a marketplace for independent coffee roasters?
@DavidSpinks Hey David. We're lucky that our customers tend to love the service and stick around. After years of doing this, I think there's no easy answer. You just work every day to try to bring people something they love. The hardest thing is probably that at least for our product there's no one-size-fits-all solution. So it's a fight between making everybody happy and simultaneously being conscious of the edge case rabbit hole. We try to use technology to enable customer happiness whenever we find a way to do that. Hope that helps!
I had an awesome experience with Craft Coffee. The hand written notes on each bag as well as the checkups and delivery process were more than enough to get me amped to try it out... and then I had my first cup and I was hooked.
There's too many snooty coffee people trying to sell you their definition of great coffee. What these guys are doing with data to get each customer exactly the right thing for them is really cool.
@poornima We're more of a quality over quantity company. And the scientists say that coffee actually appears to be super healthy. Maybe you should come back into the fold? #peerpressure
