Hey Product Hunters! We know you come across audio content on countless different mediums: on Youtube, Spotify, your Facebook feed, discovery services like Pandora, blogs, you name it. cubic.fm helps you easily save these sounds and stream all in the same player, no matter what the source is. Instead of asking you to change your listening experience, we wanted to be WITH you in your experience. That’s what our Chrome extension is for. It gives you a “save” button wherever you come across audio content; one click will add it to your library. We believe that the music library experience has to be redefined for the streaming era, and wrote more about it here: https://medium.com/@onuryavuz/ur... cubic.fm is currently in private beta, but our doors are wide open to you! So excited to hear your thoughts and questions, we'll be here all day answering them :)
Aloke
Look great! Very excited to start using it. Nice onboarding too. Curious if you have designed for the case where links are deprecated or lost. Does it search for another source or just show a dead link? This was my main gripe with Hypem
Erdem Gelal
@alokepillai We continuously check if there are any dead links, and update with the new one. There also exists the case that the algorithm doesn't find a new replacement, we're working on making it better :)
Aloke
@erdemgelal @alokepillai Good to know. I am 11 new sounds deep & loving it. Keep it up guys!
Samuel Beek
Nice product but you lost me when you placed an automatic tweet after I signed up with Twitter. You shouldn't do that without the user knowing, I suggest you ask people to tweet so they can skip the waiting list for example.
Erdem Gelal
@samuelbeek Thanks for the feedback Samuel, never intended to make you feel uncomfortable. We've fixed this.
dklimkin
Looks cool! One question: is it 100% legal?
Erdem Gelal
@dklimkin Thanks! Sure, cubic.fm is powered by APIs of legal streaming services, including Spotify, Deezer, Rdio, Youtube and Soundcloud. Even if you add songs from other services, we'd find it on these sources and stream it to you.
Ahmet Sülek
Using it for a while now, at last the music around gathered in one place!
Erdem Gelal
@ahmetsulek a pleasure to have you in our beta community :)
Erdem Gelal
The auto-tweeting problem is fixed, thank you all for the feedback!
Akshay Kulkarni
This is insanely cool!! I used to make a note of everything awesome I find on evernote and then manually add them to my playlist on spotify. Those days are gone..Thanks for making this!!
Erdem Gelal
@akshay2104 👊this is a perfect comment, thanks Akshay! Similar to you, we had beta users, who previously created boards on Pinterest, with Youtube and Soundcloud links :)
Peter Frank
This is great, it solves a use-case I've been wanting to see addressed for ages-- I "favorite" a song on HypeM, but have to navigate to a blog in order to "like" it on SoundCloud. Now I can save everything (including the occasional YouTube link) to an agnostic-playlist on Cubic.FM. Would be great to hook up a global-hotkey to allow me to pause, play, skip, etc. I currently use StreamKeys (another Chrome Extension), so I'm sure it's possible.
Erdem Gelal
@peterkimfrank that's exactly the type of pain we want gone :) Actually, we had an old version of cubic.fm before this one, and it was integrated with Streamkeys. I'll talk with its maker Alex to cover this new beta as well. Thanks for pointing it out!
Peter Frank
@erdemgelal Awesome. One small thing: I understand it makes sense to pop the notification every first-time a user navigates to a supported service, but it might be good to include a "I get it already!" checkbox option (in the alert itself) after the first 2-3 notifications.
Erdem Gelal
@peterkimfrank oh, normally the notification does not appear after the 1st time. We'll look into that, thanks for pointing it out.
Erdem Gelal
@peterkimfrank Hey Peter! Thanks to Alex from Streamkeys, it's now integrated with cubic.fm as well :)
Peter Frank
@erdemgelal Ah, I meant after the first 2-3 /total/ notifications. IE once it pops on Reddit, Youtube, and SoundCloud, I don't need the reminder on HypeM, 8Tracks, etc. So on the 2nd or 3rd notification, you could include that checkbox. Anyway, loving it so far and thanks for getting StreamKeys supported, I'm a fan!
Alessandra Pereyra
This looks pretty cool. I'm wondering on the tech details about running those services on the same player. Are you using something like popcorn.js? Great job!
Ozgur Akcali
@yaraher Thanks a lot. We do not use a third party library for that. We integrated each of these services' javascript sdks (Youtube, Soundcloud, Deezer and Rdio), and developed a player that can communicate with and control all of them simultaneously.
Erdem Gelal
Hey Hunters! What would you like to see on cubic.fm next?
Erdem Gelal
@ay_o did see that coming :) That's definitely on the roadmap.
Russ Berkun
Very nice! I wonder if there is any way to bring it to the mobile world? It would be nice if users could save lists from Shazam.
Erdem Gelal
@russberkun Hey Russ! We've built cubic.fm to redefine the music library experience for the streaming era. It would never be complete without a mobile app, and that's on the way. On the other hand, our extension already covers Shazam website. You'll find your save button next to each track you've shazamed!
Antoine Marguerie
Apparently close to what we do at http://disco.io. It seems to be pretty well done. Best of luck.
Onur Yavuz
@antoinem thanks man! I know disco.io and you guys are doing an awsome job! Best of luck!
Fred
Seems cool, i'm a big user of Spotify so the majority (99%) of my library is there but I like this for collecting SoundCloud & YouTube. The Auto-Tweet thing was annoying though, needs to be opt in.
Erdem Gelal
@fredsoneya We don't want you to miss out on any sound out there Fred, thanks! You're right, the auto-tweet thing was fixed rightaway.
Akshay Kulkarni
@erdemgelal when I click on the icon to add music from youtube it automatically adds it to the recently saved channel instead of the channel I created. Can I change this behaviour and make it save to my other channel by default?
Erdem Gelal
@akshay2104 Currently as you save it, you can specify a channel to send the track to; but it'd add it to #recently-saved by default. Thank you for pointing this out, we'll definitely consider this for a better experience.
Akshay Kulkarni
@erdemgelal Also I have noticed that I can't start playing my music directly from the play button at the bottom. I have to manually click on a track to start streaming. It would be great if I could just start playing without all that process.
Erdem Gelal
@akshay2104 nice catch 👌
Irving Torres
That on-boarding experience... 10/10 you guys. So far it's flawless. I had a few youtube tabs open and I just closed them after saving. No bugs so far. Excited to see how this integrates into my music experience.
Erdem Gelal
@irvingtorresyc Irving, thank you for the fantastic comments. We send you 10/10 of our love from Istanbul :)
Mike Bestvina
This is great. Can I share channels with friends so they can listen to them? Can I invite people to collaborate on channels
Erdem Gelal
@mbesto Hi Mike! We don't currently have shareable channels, but that's definitely on the roadmap, collaboration too :)
Bulent Keles
Very convenient! Get all your music in a single list (or custom lists) and play right within. I like it!
Erdem Gelal
@bulentkeles indeed!
David Ford
@erdemgelal cool product! i think i'll be using this a lot. can't wait to go through it tonight. tiny quick thing caught my eye, on the page that appears after you verify your email address: "Now redirection you back to the home page." redirection should be redirecting :D. good luck!
Erdem Gelal
@daveofthefuture thanks Dave! Taking care of it now.
Ashwinn
Well done Erdem & team! I've wanted this for a long time :)
Erdem Gelal
@shwinnabego Thanks Ashwinn! Before our launch here, we came across your PH love letter and loved it :)
Kam Bain ✍
Stoked to give this a try. I know the guys at Bop.fm have similar goals. What's the primary difference when comparing the two platforms?
Erdem Gelal
@kam_bain Hey Kam! Actually, the idea of streaming multiple sources on the same player is in the focus of many emerging music startups. Some friends from these companies are in this comment thread as well. While the general idea about the drawbacks of fragmentation in online music is towards broken music sharing, we believe that the major problem is on the consumption side. We focus on maximising this player's value add by helping users effortlessly centralise their data.
