Interesting model, made for millennials. After a few years living in San Francisco, I sold my car. It's unnecessary in cities like this but occasionally I'll rent a vehicle and the insurance charge can cost as much as the rental itself.

@rrhoover Cuvva for Owners is for the people who need to own a car (for whatever reason) but can't afford to/don't want to pay for full insurance. If it isn't being driven it shouldn't pay!
Steven Renwick
Is the insurance fully-comprehensive or 3rd party only? Is there limits on the type of cars that can be insured? (i.e. Porsches etc)
Freddy Macnamara
@major_grooves Thanks for your question! All of the insurance is fully comp right now, there is a limit on the type of car we can cover but this is linked to how long you've held your licence.
Paul-Henri Laugier
Looking forward to see you in the EU (mostly in France) ;)
Matt Collier
Looks great team, are you also looking into Motorbike insurance? People ride a lot less in winter and some only ride on weekends?
James Billingham
@mollier_ We would like to offer this, but it'll be a little while until it can happen. Motorcycle insurance is actually surprisingly different from insurance for cars. In general, underwriters who mostly insure cars won't typically insure motorcycles. Our existing underwriters explained to us motorbike insurance is fairly niche and requires specialist knowledge to make it successful.

Used you guys a few times now, makes life so much easier when you need to borrow a car of a family member or friend.

Love that this is done via app and not weird devices you plug into your car. Come to the US!
James Billingham
@kunalslab We may involve OBD devices in the future. It'd be useful to know why you'd prefer an app-only solution without a hardware element, if you don't mind my asking?
Kunal Bhatia
@billinghamj I guess I have two issues. (1) The way I've see other insurance carriers do it here in the US is that you plug in the OBD device, then mail it back after some time. Sometimes, they have a web portal that updates daily (but who's going to check that routinely?). You then get an adjustment to your insurance on your next bill. That's not direct feedback. (2) Also, they have set up incentives for good driving in a troubling way. Hard breaking impacts your bill negatively, so I know people are more likely to cross in yellow or run a red light to avoid that behavior. I saw that you currently ask drivers to select the number of hours of coverage they want, and then show the time remaining. Ideally, I'd just want to start Cuvva when I leave, use Waze for GPS, and have Cuvva stop when I reach my destination. Then you get a receipt, just like if you had used Uber.
James Billingham
@kunalslab Thanks! For #1, this would definitely not be an issue with Cuvva. It would be connected directly to the phone via bluetooth, meaning we can process data from any device almost instantly. For #2, that is a great point. We can actually do this with the app by itself already, as your phone has an accelerometer, but I agree that telematics can cause misaligned incentives when it comes to safety. If we do start working with telematics, we wouldn't be pricing based on this data initially at least. The device would probably be used mainly for determining when you are/aren't driving so we can automatically bill you for the time - so you wouldn't even need to tell us when you start ideally!
Kunal Bhatia
@billinghamj Great! I guess my main bias against ORD devices was the current way they're being used. Looking forward to your vision of car insurance.
James Billingham
I work on the technical side of Cuvva. Happy to answer any questions :)
@marty
@billinghamj used this over Christmas whilst back home at my parents, still surprised how easy it was! Great job πŸ‘πŸ»
Keith Brown
Interesting idea. Curious how this would work at scale though?
James Billingham
@optimizethis It's designed for scale! What issues do you think might arise?
Loukman
Best business model of the year, Cheers guys.
Blake Folgado
@loukmannacik Thanks Loukman!

Any news as to when this comes out in the USA? Would be amazing for teen drivers who only drive to and from school and work. Plus it would be even better for people in large cities that only drive when they leave the city,
Mr. Mason
How it is different compared to Metromile?
George Streten
Love this so much, looks really great. Wish you could insure drivers under 21 though πŸ˜… (I know this isn't down to you guys, just the industry!)
Loren G
@grs Our underwriters place certain restrictions on us. One of these is that we're not allowed to cover people under 21 and over 75. This is an initial conservative limitation which they have decided on because they need more risk data before expanding the allowances. We are working continuously to make this happen though.
James Billingham
@lozzagould However @grs we will be allowing 19 & 20 year olds in the next couple of days, as long as you've held your licence for at least a year. We'll be allowing provisional drivers aged 17+ in the next couple of weeks.

Blake Folgado
@arthurgd3 Yes for sure. But for now the UK is the focus.
Danial
Is this U.K. Only or you guys planning for US too?
Freddy Macnamara
@dany20mh UK only right now i'm afraid. US is a very different ball game!
Ivan Ivanovski
Nice job. Do you have cycling insurance also?
Matty
What are the requirements though? Is it available for new drivers?
James Billingham
@southallmatty Yep - no minimum licence age. Insurance group up to 40, minimum age 21, vehicle value up to Β£75k.
Evil Octopus
Awesome design!
Alex Harvey
@billinghamj Fantastic design and concept guys! Are you in the US yet?
James Billingham
@helloilluminate We hope to come to the US eventually, but it'll be a little way down the line - the US is a beast when it comes to insurance! :)
