Over the past few years, every day as I dropped off and picked up my child from school, I would think about how to simultaneously record our conversations, the scenery along the way, and every part of our journey. So, in the last month of 2023, I began creating CycleHUD. It not only fulfills these needs but also comes equipped with beautifully designed, fun-to-use speedometer, level, and compass, adding excitement to my electric bike rides. Now, I am excited to share CycleHUD with you. Whether you are a parent like me, shuttling your children back and forth, a daily commuter on your bike, or even a city-traversing wizard on a broom, CycleHUD offers you: 1. A fun-filled dashboard Including four unique speedometers, a level, and a compass, it conveniently displays current speed, cycling distance, average speed, and other information. 2. Dash Cam Record the scenery you pass while riding with video and easily switch between different rear cameras. 3. Route Recording Record the trajectory of each trip, making it easy to revisit your travels at any time. 4. Cycling Record Management - Select photos from your phone's album as the cover for your cycling records. - When viewing cycling records, switch between video or map mode to see data like speed and distance at that time. - Select video clips and export beautiful videos with tracks and cycling data. 5. Map Navigation Search for destinations before heading out, choose routes, and explore the city more conveniently. 6. Switch the maximum speed of the speedometer in settings In the settings menu, you can switch to your preferred dashboard, adjust the maximum speed of the speedometer, and the resolution of recorded videos.

@kelvinbrainless Congrats on the launch! There are a lot of older apps that can track cycling data, but many don’t have the ability to generate cycling videos! I usually use a cycling data tracking app along with my DJI equipment for filming. So, I’m really excited about this video creation feature—it’s going to make things so much easier for me! And if it could eventually support linking with DJI devices, that would be even cooler! After all, phone cameras might not match the quality of dedicated filming hardware.
Kelvin Chen
@devindsgbyq Thanks. Did you mean DJI osmo action?

Congrats on the launch @kelvinbrainless! I use my phone to track my rides quite a bit but always wished I could record bits of them while doing so and this hits that! Are we able to pair the app to an external camera so we don't have to mount the phone upright? My mount is currently flesh against the bike for better dynamics and vision. Excited to give this a try!
Kelvin Chen
@gabe Thank you for your suggestion. The idea of connecting an external camera is fantastic, and I will try to add this feature.

Great app! I liked your starting point and the final product you ended up with, the price is reasonable too. Congrats on the launch! 🚀
Kelvin Chen
@mlkrsrc Thanks! I'm stoked you dig why I made this app. Hope it helps you snag some sweet snapshots of daily life too.

Also, to celebrate the launch, CycleHUD is holding a promotion on the App Store with a 50% discount, which will last until August 31st.

Well, I don't do cycling on traveling 😅 but the concept is awesome. Love the work. Congrats on the Launch 🎉
Kelvin Chen
@shayan_ali_bakhsh Thanks. What means of transportation do you prefer for commuting? Feel free to try recording with CycleHUD; it's not just designed for cycling :D

CycleHUD sounds like a game-changer for parents and cyclists! How does the video exporting feature work? Is it easy to integrate with social media for sharing our journeys? Also, love that it accommodates different activities like kayaking!
Kelvin Chen
@ema_elisi Thank you. You can choose to export the original video, or combine the source video with cycling routes and data into a new video. These videos can be saved to your phone's gallery, and then shared anywhere you like.

Wow, @kelvinbrainless, CycleHUD seems like a game changer for all of us on wheels (or brooms)! 🚴‍♂️ The way you combined a speedometer, dash cam, and route recorder is pure genius. Can't wait to record my family rides and relive those moments! Quick question—any plans for an enhanced night mode for those evening rides? #PHLaunch #MVP

This looks like an awesome tool, @kelvinbrainless! I'm curious, how does CycleHUD differentiate itself from other cycling apps in terms of UX and features? The dash cam feature sounds particularly useful, but what kind of storage requirements are we looking at for the videos? Also, have you thought about integration with other health or tracking apps to enhance the cycling record management? Can't wait to see how others in the PH community react to this launch!
Kelvin Chen
@zanereed596 Thank you. The cycling recording software available on the market seems to be made for professionals. CycleHUD will prioritize daily commutes and leisurely travels. This is especially true for families with children, who value the fun moments with their kids during the ride more than professional cycling data. As for integrating more health data, I will give it good consideration in future versions.
Star Boat
This looks intriguing, @kelvinbrainless! Is there a specific platform you’re targeting for the video exports? Also, how do you ensure the video quality while recording cycling routes?
Kelvin Chen
@star_boat Thanks. The video sharing does not specify any platform. As for the quality of the video, it currently supports choosing between 1280p or 1920p in the app's settings, as well as whether to enable the iPhone's built-in Video Stabilization function. I will also continue to enhance the filming capabilities.

@elke_qin Thanks! I'm actually a UI designer, and this time I tried my hand at developing an app. Luckily, with the help of AI, learning SwiftUI went a lot smoother.

This sounds really interesting, @kelvinbrainless! The integration of features like a dash cam and route recording for e-bike rides could provide so much value—especially for busy parents. How do you envision balancing the speedometer and navigation features for those who might be distracted while riding? Also, can you elaborate on the types of export options available for the videos? This could really enhance our cycling experiences!
Kelvin Chen
@dance17219 Thank you. CycleHUD currently only supports basic navigation features because the initial design intention was to record daily travel, and most of the time, we are familiar with the routes. As for the issue of distraction, I've also tried to use large contrasts and more dark areas in the design to minimize distraction for the rider. The recorded videos can be directly exported to the phone's album, or you can choose segments to compile with the riding data, creating a new video to save. Currently, all videos are saved in the mov format to the album.

Wow, CycleHUD sounds like a game-changer for cyclists! Excited to see the unique features, especially the video clips export. Great job @kelvinbrainless on combining fun and functionality! Upvoted!
Kelvin Chen
@marygarcia Thank you. Besides cycling, CycleHUD is also suitable for recording videos while rowing, riding scooters, and other forms of transportation. In fact, some users even use CycleHUD as a secondary screen for their Model 3.
Antoine Gauthier
This cycle recorder sounds really innovative, especially the dash cam feature for capturing those scenic rides. I’m curious about the battery life while using the speedometer and recording simultaneously. Also, how user-friendly is the interface when switching between video and map mode? Excited to see how this can enhance my cycling experience! Great job, @kelvinbrainless!
Kelvin Chen
@antoine_gauthier_ Thank you. Currently, on the iPhone 15 Pro, recording a 5-minute video with CycleHUD will consume about 1-3% of battery life. There are four dashboards in the app, one of which does not take video when recording the route. This is design for long-distance recording. When I usually use my e-bike, I also connect my phone to the e-bike's power to use CycleHUD. Of course, I will also try my best to make it more energy-efficient.
William Scott
Congrats on launching CycleHUD! It’s impressive how you've turned your daily bike rides into something so interactive and useful. The idea of combining a fun dashboard with route recording and a dash cam is really innovative. How has CycleHUD changed your rides with your child, and what’s been your favorite feature to use? Looking forward to seeing how this enhances the cycling experience for others too.
