Density Open Area is a custom radar sensor built to count people in open space, featuring 4x the coverage and 10x the precision of camera-based alternatives. This anonymous-by-design sensor offers industry-leading accuracy and field of view.

Density is so cool. I can imagine this being so critical for space planning, architecture, facility management, and utilization tracking. Brilliant to connect the threshold tracking with open area tracking -- didn't even realize this was technologically possible!
Andrew Farah
@ericjorgenson honestly, we weren't sure it was possible either. But once we saw the output of one of our early prototypes, we about did a backflip. Side note, turns out radar is delicate in a lot of ways and hard to manufacture. Some parts actually expire if you don't use them in a set time.

Is this going to be used with retail for purposes of foot traffic? Or is this more for space planning?
Mario Y. Peshev
Great job as usual, Andrew and team. I've seen Density's sensors deployed in production and they are incredibly accurate. Wish you all the best with the new product lines!

When I first learned about Density at first, I thought It was valuable, novel and outright cool. Solving a problem that exists everywhere but remained mostly unchecked. Now with COVID and all, I know it is crucial. Maybe not life-saving, but certainly life-enabling technology in the "new normal". Excited to see what's next.

I haven't seen anything else like this. Very cool!

Great product - congrats!

Super important right now when companies are trying to reopen safely.
Andrew Farah
@emmastarks 100%. All data will tie back to our software https://www.density.io/people-co.... Which was also on PH a little while back. https://www.producthunt.com/post...

you know what else would be cool? instead of having a counter for bouncers or staff in restaurants, the total number of people updated digitally in an app for doorman to use in bars or restaurants. You could even pitch this to government departments in countries who want to ensure covid safe measures (very stringent here in Aus) and bulk order your product for hospitality groups to use. Could speed up your growth during this pandemic...
Ben Redfield
@mert_erkul great ideas! We're currently working with customers on maintaining fire (pre-COVID) and health (COVID) codes, removing the need for manual counting. I'm very interested in also surfacing that data for occupants / patrons to be able to make safe decisions about space as well. The government approach is an interesting one!

always thought this is hard problem to solve growing up as kid. now, we have solved this issue. Exciting times!
Ben Redfield
@xd_dins Honestly, we didn't realize how hard of a problem it was when we first started. We had just assumed that people counting had been solved since the 80's. Oh, how we were wrong... (but I'm glad we stuck with it!)

Can I ask how you build your website? I love the simplicity.
Angelina Cordus
It is very good job
Hi Bob
Cool but waaay to expensive
Thomas
Looks pretty cool, but what about other colors?
Ben Redfield
@ayydayuming On rare occasion we've done a different anodization finish, but it adds a lot to the cost. For the most part, our customers end up really happy with how the sensors blend into their space.

Very cool! Get for understanding how people use space at outdoor events!
Andrew Farah
@kate_bb Outdoor has always been an interesting challenge. With our infrared technology, we would always run into the sunlight challenge. Our 850nm lasers compete with direct sunlight making outdoor challenging. With Open Area, we think it's feasible to eventually do outdoors as it's unaffected by light. Important note, this version is not waterproof :)
Michael MacMillan
@kate_bb @andrewfarah use lidar then?
Joseph Fasone
Occupancy and space utilization in the built world is a super hard problem to solve, especially in open spaces. This would have been an incredible thing to have pre-pandemic, let alone post-pandemic when everyone will need to monitor occupancy of key open floorplan areas. Sooo cool. Excited to see it in the wild!
CHOUDHARY DHANRAJ
Can it is be used for desk occupancy monitoring? if yes then what is the accuracy?
