A new home on the internet for micro-interactions, easter eggs, and other seemingly extra design details that infuse life, personality, and fun back into the web.
Hey folks! π We're really excited to be sharing Design Spells with you today!
Design Spells started in May 2023 as nothing more than an X/Twitter account where we shared "design details that feel like magic". As someone who works at Mobbin, I'm no stranger to the state of design inspiration online. It's so easy today to find UI/UX inspirations that are professional, prim, and proper. But what about the fun, silly, and perhaps pointless details? Things that might not increase conversion rates or boost financial metrics, but exist simply for the sake of fun. Do they still exist or have they become a remnant of the early internet?
My gut (and my Twitter feed) said no. I believe there are many such details out there, just waiting to be discovered. And so, with only a handful of examples in mind, I started the Design Spells' Twitter account with a few friends.
As our audience grew, we decided it was time to go beyond Twitter and explore a more inclusive medium. This led to us starting a biweekly newsletter in July 2023, which has since grown to 5,500+ subscribers!
And now, that handful of examples that we started with has expanded into a mini catalog of them! This brings us to today's launch...
Introducing the Design Spells website, a new home on the internet for micro-interactions, easter eggs, and other seemingly extra design details that feel like magic πͺ
Our hope for Design Spells is that by showcasing the amazing work of designers and engineers who have successfully integrated delight into their apps, we can help break the notion that professional software cannot be fun. Because it is always okay to have a little fun and be a little silly at times! Ultimately, we hope to inspire more creators to build delight into their products.
Last but not least, a huge thank you to everyone who has supported us thus far π
@itsnotchester this is cool, when you have a lot of stuff it will be great. It's annoying when you see something on Behance or Dribble, then its almost impossible to do in an app or on the web.
Hey Chester, congratulations on expanding Design Spells from a Twitter account to a full-fledged website! The journey from a handful of examples to a catalog of magical design details is truly inspiring. It's fantastic to see a platform dedicated to celebrating the whimsical side of design. I'm curious, what's been one of your favorite easter eggs or micro-interactions that you've featured so far? Keep up the great work, and I can't wait to see more designers embrace fun in their creations!
