Detail turns your Mac in a powerful, all-in-one video production studio. Whether you’re creating an engaging online course, want to immerse your audience in your video podcast, or record a polished product demo, Detail makes video production simple.
This is impressive and promising. I do, however, got a couple of technical Qs:
- If I plug in a capture card and hook up a DSLR, can I control recording resolution, fps and bitrate? If not what resolution, fps and bitrate does it record in and what compression it uses?
- How much can it handle, have you tried to throw at it say 3 4k 30fps cameras and record in the same time, does it bottleneck the Mac's processor?
- For multi-person podcasts, can I have multiple audio sources and control volume independently?
- Is there a windows version coming as well?
As a content creator I tried loads of tools, from recording with Restream or Riverside.fm which are both a letdown because they heavily compress the footage, to OBS or Multi Webcam recorder app on windows. I got an Elgato Camlink Pro with 2-3 4K Sony Cameras connected.
@florin_biro Oooh, we love technical Qs
> If I plug in a capture card and hook up a DSLR, can I control recording resolution, fps and bitrate? If not what resolution, fps and bitrate does it record in and what compression it uses?
We record incoming video 30 FPS and the incoming resolution. We have different quality settings for bitrates (see preferences). Currently, we record the incoming video at 10, 25, or 100mbit in HEVC. We don't support other frame rates yet, but it's something we'll likely add soon.
We render our video in 4K, and you can export your video at different quality settings and resolutions.
> How much can it handle, have you tried to throw at it say 3 4k 30fps cameras and record in the same time, does it bottleneck the Mac's processor?
3x 4K 30FPS should work without issues on the M1/M2 Mac. When you push it to 4 or 5 incoming 4K video sources, you might start to see some dropped frames. Performance of the M1/M2 Macs is insane.
> For multi-person podcasts, can I have multiple audio sources and control volume independently?
Not yet. But we're working on this as we speak. For now, we aggregate the audio channels into a single audio track that we store with every ISO video.
> Is there a windows version coming as well?
We don't have any plans for that yet. For now, we're leaning in on the insane rendering power of Apple Silicon. We're a small team and want to make the biggest impact.

@pveugen great and fast reply! That gives me confidence 🤓 I'll give the tool a try on my Intel processor with one 4k camera, and see how it does. Could be a good travel setup. Don't own a M1 yet but have a beafy windows machine with an RTX3090 and i10k processor + PCIe capture card capable of 4 x 4k 30fps signals. That's why I was asking for windows. On Mac you'd need 3-4 capture cards connected through multiple thunderbolts. Tried joining discord but when I click on the link in the landing page I get directed to Discord with an invite link invalid message. You might want to make sure you're using a permanent link.
@florin_biro Unfortunately, we don't (officially) support Intel Macs. The performance difference between Apple Silicon and Intel machines was too large and was holding us back from building what we believe is the future. Recording with one or two sources might work, but we're not actively testing on Intel machines anymore, so I couldn't say for sure. I'd be curious how it works for you.
We're big fans of the new Sony camera's with very good USB streaming quality (1080p / 30fps). The A7IV and FX30 have excellent USB support. For friends we're hosting in our podcast studio, we record, and edit 3 x 1080p cameras, an Apple TV through Elgato 4K60S+, and 1 or 2 iPhones with ease.
We fixed the Discord link. Thanks for the heads up! 🙇♂️
Thanks for checking out our latest Detail release. We’ll be hanging out here today to answer any questions about our product, team, challenges, and plans for the future.
A little background about what we're building at Detail...
Video production is a workflow challenge.
Creating captivating video is unnecessary time-consuming and difficult. If you’re already creating video today, you know the pain of juggling multiple tools to record, edit, share and promote your content. And if you’re just getting started, the learning curve is frustratingly steep.
That’s why we’re building an all-in-one tool for real-time video production that inspires and is easy-to-use, and gives the next 500 million creators new superpowers to produce video for any platform.

Once you start using Detail in your workflow, it will enhance your presentations incredibly! I simply love using it together with Stream Deck to easily change the scenes. Thumb up!
@varunrazora For this video, I recorded everything with Detail, using a camera, iPhone, and a screen recording. Then made a first edit in Detail and exported the edited Detail timeline to FCP XML, which my talented colleague Maaike used to finalize the video in Premiere. I exported shorter clips for social media directly from the Detail timeline, and generated subtitles from the final video with Detail. For future recordings, it would be fun to share some of our Detail projects as well so you can poke around and see how we create these videos.
You can use Detail to record, edit, and share directly, and export your project to your favorite advanced video editor if you prefer. Our editing tools are still pretty minimal and work well for most videos, but some users are used to editing with tools like DaVinci, Final Cut, or Premiere. We try to make your workflow as flexible as possible – and reduce the time it takes to produce a great video.
