@jasoncomely we do account for this where possible! E.g. Go Daddy had a .com deal where it was $1.99 for one year but $14.00 for the second - but the contract is minimum two years!! In this case we display the average, in order to show an accurate one year figure!
@jasoncomely WHOIS privacy is one thing to really pay attention to when comparing. Full disclosure, I'm the PM at Hover. We include it for free, others don't always which can add a couple of bucks to the real cost.
