Drift Introduces Sequences: Email That Helps Customers Buy

The team at Drift has built machine learning and natural language processing to make the smartest sales email automation ever. Check this out: not only does it connect emails to real-time messaging on your website creating a seamless experience for your leads and speeding up the sale cycle, but it's also smart enough to automatically opt recipients out of email based on their replies. Not to mention that it takes into consideration if a recipient has booked a meeting or started on conversation on your website and stop sending emails.

Some people think email is an old channel that no longer works. Oh boy they are wrong. As a Growth marketer in several B2B SaaS companies email was always my #1 demand generation channel. But you’ve got to use it right, and that’s when it becomes hard. At Drift we’ve built the product so you can achieve these results by sending less emails, not more. That means more relevant content to the contact by tying in their profile and actions into the sequence, and stopping it when they respond. Try it out, and let me know what you think!

Drift Sequences allow us to automate the easiest step to forget: the follow-up.

We’re able to retarget people who abandon account creation and get over 50% back.

Pros:

Intuitive interface and doesn't require you to make any drastic changes if already a Drift user.

Cons:

None

@drift @davegerhardt You gals and guys are on a tear, how far out is a knowledge base product?
David Ryan
@hnshah @drift @davegerhardt looking great DG, DC, and all Drifters. I love seeing how you're going from functionality as a product to next-level enablement for user intentions above and beyond getting shit done 🙌

Drift squad does it again 👏 can't wait to test this out. Love the personal welcome banner from sequence link clicks... can see this mixing nicely with Vidyard GoVideo for guided site tours and content experiences. Time to get to work!
Daniel J. Murphy
@evanlewis_ love that idea, Evan. Thanks for sharing!

I'm always impressed at the approach the folks at Drift take with product development. Unifying the experience for folks who are working with us, and in our funnel is always the goal; and it has become harder to do in recent years with fragmented solutions. Now Drift is bringing it all back home to make it swell for folks who just need to see a familiar face in context, and don't need to get needlessly hounded forever to get engaged. Sequences is going to make it helpful for us to create great experiences in sales and customer success. Onboarding emails, and more are going into Drift now.

Love this concept as it's bringing in a wonderful human element into the mix and making relationships personal again. Drift has been my business sherpa leading me up the mountain helping me close more opportunities and create timely interactions that matter most. I love how Sequences is getting even smarter with the help of AI/Machine Learning and eliminating people who aren't interested. Amazing advances!
Dave Gerhardt
@jeffgabel AMAZING. The Sherpa commented made our day. Thanks for the shout here.

Weren’t you guys hating emails and pushing conversation marketing exactly 6 months ago? What made you go this route? If email is going to bring the guys back to initiate conversation why can’t I use Drip and have a live chat on my website? Where does the drift stand for? Do you like email or hate it? See here… https://medium.com/@craigdaniel/... Sequences can be done through yesware. Mailshake. Active campaign and sendgrid. When you guys claimed you are going to reinvent I was like wow, but all you did was a) live chat b) drip nurturing email. And what else ? I couldn’t think of anything. Sorry guys. I love what you guys are doing but you making me do the same thing I was doing over 5 years. My sincere request is we can do a lot better for customers than packaging the same thing again and again with different terms, jargons, and making them believe the product we are building is useful.
Craig Daniel
@vishnuvvn Thanks for your comment Vishnu. As a buyer, there's two things I really hate about dozens of emails I get a day from sales people. 1. That the only way to get out of them is if I reply (but I don't want to open it!) 2. If I open one, there is a 90% chance I'm getting an unwanted phone call in the next 30 seconds. We're striving to fix those issues with Drift Sales Email Sequences: - If the recipient replies, books a meeting, has a conversation, or even if someone else from their company does so, Drift Sequences will unenroll them so they don't get sent more email. - If the recipient shows interest and clicks through, they can have a live conversation on the website through Drift messaging and avoid that unwanted phone call. We're also working on smarter ways to stop sales reps from emailing people with expected low engagement in the first place. Making sales reps be more targeted and relevant with their outreaches and buyers happier (with smaller inboxes). I hope that helped clear up our approach. If not, comment with more questions. Happy to answer!

Stoked to see this!

We beta'd Drift Sequences with our Sales Development Team. Love how easy it was to get up and running and the way we get to engage leads when they click through our emails. Great way to shorten the funnel time and increase sales velocity.

Pros:

Easy to use, simpler than most offerings, ties directly to onsite chat

Cons:

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Daniel J. Murphy
Thanks for sharing your feedback, Leo! Glad it's shortening your funnel. That's awesome to hear.

Drift has been talking about reimagining email for the past few months and today it just got real. Email has always been a great way to connect with people, but then automation got in the way, and made it way too easy to send spammy irrelevant emails at scale. Drift is helping bring the humanity back to email while automating the right things. For example, if someone replies to an email with something like "hey, please don't send my any more emails", Drift will automatically unsubscribe the user. So simple, so smart. Drift doing Drift things.
Dave Gerhardt
@tom_wentworth Thanks Tom! We love you.

Great to see Drift further push to connect chat, email, and the website. If you truly want sales and marketing alignment in your organization, you need Drift.
Jaxson Khan
Always excited for a Drift product launch. Sequences looks fantastic and I'm excited to try it. Integration with Drift and Nudge.ai is a priority. Can't wait to see what these folks come up with next.
Dave Gerhardt
@jaxson Thanks! You'll have to talk to @craigdaniel

"Spray and pray has gotten out of control" I love the movement Drift is making to help marketers engage smarter with more relevant conversations based on quality and intent. This release is just another step in that movement and I don't expect it to be the last. Keep up the great work Drift team!

Finally, a company is building a tool that streamlines the communication across the millions of tools that are popping up weekly. Right now our customer experience is fragmented, at best. But with this, that's all going to change. Can't wait to implement this.

Pros:

Single stream of communication

Cons:

All the other tools I'll have to cancel as a result

Robert Gillespie
Was fortunate enough to be involved in the beta for this and the results were amazing! The speed and turnaround from Drift Sequences, in terms of turning the emails we sent into live conversations resulting in actual SALES, was brilliant.
Daniel J. Murphy
@robert_gillespie Robert, that's awesome! Thank you for sharing your feedback.

I was offered an opportunity to play with this new feature in December. It was turnkey and very simple and affordable, especially when compared to something like Pardot or Hubspot for lead nurturing. With the addition of the full HTML editor, you can add pixels to track across systems, making it even more powerful.

Pros:

Simple, Elegant Sequence Solution

Cons:

None that I could find

Nick Kusters
I got a popup and I'd really like to know how this works. I am at work, and it asks if I want to see how it would look on Nigella.nl; how can it have this address? I'm a software developer and security geek but for the life of me, this I can't figure out.
Dave Gerhardt
@nick_kusters hey Nick - we use Clearbit to personalize messages based IP address

Reaching out to our CSM @ Drift this week, excited to start using these sequences on the Sales Development side of things. Seems like a creative way to convert and identify unknown chat visitors. Great job, Drift!

Pros:

Innovative, Personalized

Cons:

None yet

Gregor Stevens Campbell

I shy away from email marketing tools because I like to keep my messaging highly personalized. Most tools are getting farther and farther away from that in the quest for volume and automation.

The people at Drift are finding the way to keep messaging personal and also leverage automation. A positive thing for senders and readers.

Pros:

Love Drift and this looks like a great continuation, excited to use this

Cons:

none
