I find it fascinating how some products launch and are instantly hated for seemingly no reason (e.g. Ello), and others are seemingly loved for no reason (e.g. Meerkat). I know it's comparing apples to oranges, but find it interesting anyway. I've never seen a Product Hunt comment thread with such negativity before.

@cacheflowe I like the end goal of an ad free social network. But what I don't get is how Ello is going to get there, and drive engagement. There is only so much time in the day to browse FB, Twitter, reddit, etc... Ello is competing for the same attention ultimately, no? What's the core value prop for why someone will use Ello?

Looking at the discussion when V1 launched, I really wonder what people think of it now. I mean I registered and never looked back haha

What is the USP of Ello? Is it a 'social network with no ads' and that's the main reason people join it? Or is it something like a 'niche social network for an underground art community?'

@cacheflowe such as?

I heard they got funding but... can't believe they're trying again. OK, the re-design seems sexy and fresh, but what's going to make me use Ello and ignore my precious twitter? I don't buy it, tbh.

@v4violetta Yeah. I am unsure of the point of it. Iterating on features sort of besides the point. I love Twitter not for any feature but because I can post something not PG rated or have adult discussions (where I might be wrong) without worrying that my 15 year old niece will see it.

Background. Maybe I'm in a weird hold-back cohort, but I can't actually see any of the changes.

@chrismessina It's rolling out over the next week, so you probably don't have v2 yet. If you're not logged in, you definitely aren't seeing the updates. You should next week though, as we complete the roll-out.

I don't think of Ello as a replacement for Facebook/Twitter/Tumblr, but rather as an alternative with a different community. I think there's plenty of room for niche services like this with their own communities. Ello has a strong aesthetic that makes it appealing for the design community and I can see it being successful within that niche. Kudos to all the people at Ello for not quitting when things didn't blow up last year. To hear that they've been hard at work on a complete rebuild and also an iOS app has me very excited and impressed. I'm looking forward to getting the update on my account and re-engaging with Ello.

@jameskoole I agree with you. While I don't use Ello, every great community pretty much started out with a strong dominance in niche, and those people who passionately loved the product propelled the idea to popularity with a broader audience. Since Ello is a fellow Colorado company, I hope they crush it and can grow. Also, they're hiring more people: https://ello.co/wtf/post/jobs

@alexkehr We're both with companies that don't compete with, but rather provide an alternative to the likes of GoDaddy. I think of Ello the same way. You don't need 300 million users to be successful.

Paul and the team are building intuitive community software and they have a passionate community. They might have to take on Facebook as a marketing technique, but they don't have to beat them to be successful, just as Product Hunt doesn't have to beat Reddit to successful.

Stumbled across this when giving my bookmarks an end-of-year clean-up and I have to say: I'm pleasantly surprised. What started out as a me-too network, now seems to hold some sort of middle ground between FFFFOUND!, Pinterest, and Twitter. Different vibe, with a strong undercurrent of making/creating underneath.

Having "wtf" in the titlebar of your release notes is just immature.

I'm really unimpressed... sort of like I was when I first checked out Ello but hey that's just me.
