Exer Studio is a Mac app that delivers real time exertion stats and a Peloton-style leaderboard virtual workout session using edge-based AI and computer vision – no extra hardware needed. 💪
What’s up hunters! 😻
Stoked to share Studio with you today - a much better way to do virtual workouts.
🔥Important: Our waitlist will be first-come, first-serve + get you access to free virtual fitness sessions with our studio partner, so get signed up!
If you’ve done Zoom workouts (or IG, Youtube… or Webex?!) you maybe felt like something was missing. It isn’t the same as your in-person gym, or your in-the-park group sessions. 🏞
Getting feedback from your coach isn’t quite as dialed in, the competitive vibes are different, and let’s not even get into Zoom fatigue after a long day of remote work. 😅
Studio brings all that back. 💪
You get real time workout scores, effort zones and leaderboards - which means you can compete against yourself or everyone else, even though you’re at home in front of your computer.
And you don’t need hardware or equipment, so no more of this:
📍Fun tip: You can actually turn off the Zoom camera - Studio still sees your workout, gets you on the leaderboard and allows your coach to see a chart of your score.
I just actually realized that Studio allows you to work out “pants optional” but let’s not get into that. 🤭
Anyway - last thing I thought you might enjoy is seeing the AI in action. It follows 20+ body points and ignores your wallpaper, kitchen… clothes… to generate our scoring.
Privacy first! 👀
🔥Check out this little demo of what the AI is looking at:
It’s cool stuff, and we’ll be around all day to answer questions, so ask away. ✋
And we’ll be getting you all off our waitlist soon!
very cool, congrats @dshan@zawthet and team!
would love to hear how you're thinking about the tradeoff from the coaches' perspective of being independent using something like zoom + an events/ticketing platform like mixily vs being inside of exer with the augmented engagement via leaderboards etc.
@zawthet@smalter Solid question - especially as so many fitness professionals had to shift towards more independence (furloughs, etc) and basically set up their business from scratch earlier this year; scheduling, ticketing, video production, email marketing, etc.
Studio's built to live alongside *whatever* someone's using to run and maintain the business, and eventually will plug into those tools - we're not looking to be a full-service solution but rather compliment all those other tools and platforms. We're focused on just the movement tracking + real time workout data. We built Studio to demonstrate what's possible, but in the future this tech will live in the browser, or integrate into other platforms/communities so the same engagement and competitive features can live anywhere.
I need it to tell me when I'm slouching like a Disney villain. Just turn it on and watch me work to tell me to STRAIGHTEN UP. Until then - stoked for this gang, seems like pretty awesome tech.
Hey Product Hunters! 👋 I’m Zaw, one of the co-founders of Exer.
We are super excited to launch Exer Studio today, our second product in 5 months! 🚀
As this crazy year continues to progress, one of the side effects millions of people have been faced with is the maintenance and fulfillment of our health and wellness. A lot of the choices that people had for staying in shape were taken away this year, and it’s changed the way we all think about our fitness moving forward.
Even as things have begun to slowly open up, more than 60% of consumers are convinced they may never go back to a gym environment. 🏋🏻♂️
That hurts coaches, fitness consumers, pretty much everyone. So we built Studio - we actually pushed it up our roadmap to try and help.
Studio works with Zoom/IG/YouTube, any livestream workouts and gives you:
🏆 Class/session leaderboards, updating in real time
📈 Output scores and real time charts based on how hard you’re working
❤️ Power zones - a % from 1 to 100 that reflects your effort levels in 5 second increments
👀 10x better visibility into your workout - for you and your coach
🚫 No hardware required besides your laptop (and its camera)
Studio is a labor of love for all coaches and users to adapt to this new reality of virtual workouts.
Remember, we’re not trying to replace coaches, but give them even more ways to stay connected to the people they train.
It’s only available on Mac (for users, not coaches) for now, but we’ll have a browser version soon. 💻
💰You can use Studio for free and with any video conferencing/streaming platform.
We’re launching with a waitlist to ensure everyone gets a great experience, but today you can download the app and take Studio for a spin with our “Try it Now experience”!
We’d love to hear your questions and feedback 📨
@chrismessina yep! the coach controls actually already work on mobile. the browser/mobile version for participants is coming soon. we actually don't integrate with zoom, just take the same camera feed off the laptop...so it works with almost any virtual fitness platform.
Big thanks to @zawthet@dshan@clint_gehde for some next-level workout sh#t. When I was introduced to Exer Plank and Exer Studio, I was a couple months deep into the Quarantine. I was a big fan of running / taking HIIT classes with other people. So the “no people” thing was real bummer for me :-)
When I jumped in as beta Tester with the Exer team, I didn’t "get" how they were going to measure “output” with any reasonable accuracy. Knowing Derek for a while only amplified my skepticism :-) …But it works … seriously just works. Sometime that’s all that needs to be said!
Having worked through several 30 minute sessions, my exertion scores consistently reflect how hard I work. It tells me when I can be working harder. It tells me when people are catching up. I need that kind of motivation and gamification now. I think most of us do.
Big old congratulations, Exer Team. I’ll see you soon!
Stay well, everyone…
Do you envision using Exer AI in the future for sport specific form and alignment. Perhaps coaching best form for striking a soccer ball; or perhaps shooting free-throws? You know what I'm saying...or if you don't, just ignore me ... I'm not sure what I'm asking half the time :-) Thanks again @zawthet@dshan@clint_gehde and Exer Studio team!
This is very cool. I do have some questions also in matters of safety.
I have a degree in Exercise Science and worked at a Physical therapy center for a while, how will your product take into account for those that have any underlying health issues and customize the exercise built for them?
I see your product has real-time output scores, effort zones, leaderboards, how will your product help the client be careful in their workout output not go through Rhabdomyolysis?
Will you add water breaks in the sessions? Will your product be able to watch the client's water intake in order to make sure every workout is a great one? If they don't meet the minimum, they can't work out.
Will you have exclusive certification courses for teaching virtually online?
Thanks.
@jessehojjensen Hey Jesse, these are great questions, thanks for asking them.
Most of this will come down to the coaches using Studio and their relationship to their community/participants. We don't run workouts, or design them. Studio's a tool that coaches can use to augment their instructions, by leveraging the real time data they're getting in the app - it's not a replacement for coaches or trainers.
Teaching and coaching virtually is challenging as it is, so we built Studio to add more insights into the experience. As we roll out features like form correction, it should help highlight correct form habits even in moments that the coach may miss visually, as an example.
Make sense?
Hey Product Hunters! 💪
As a performance coach and former gym owner with over 20 years of coaching experience, I’ve seen how COVID-19 has rocked the industry, forcing physical studios and thousands of coaches to shut down and adjust to a new reality.
Consumers are reluctant to return to an enclosed gym environment; national gym chains have filed for bankruptcy while other studios have indefinitely closed their physical locations. This moment has fitness industry professionals feeling more disconnected and isolated than ever - and our hope is to leverage AI to help rebuild and strengthen our communities. 👥
Although heartbreaking to see, I am proud of the industry’s innovation through these difficult times. Virtual options for studios and training models are being innovated, and new jobs are being created.
With brick and mortar gyms or studios expanding their virtual arms, Studio gives them a differentiated offering to engage their community.
We strongly believe that coaches (the human kind!) still need to bring their experience and community insights into these virtual sessions, and we want to help them use technology to power better interactivity and social features. 🏋️💻
I’m excited for all of you to try out Exer’s 2nd product, and I’m even more excited to get thousands of coaches, studios and their communities onto this platform. Together we can help impact millions into an overall better sweat experience.
Let’s go!
This is the coolest product I've worked on, and it's really exciting to share it. I feel like our team was able to solve some really tricky technical, as well as user-experience challenges in a relatively short amount of time. Seeing the ML model being used in an entirely different context from the Plank app is really cool, and the tech we were able to use to tie all the pieces together is awesome. We were able to flex a lot of different muscles for this one (literally!).
Our tech arsenal is growing, and momentum is picking up. There’s some really cool places we’ll continue to take it in the future!
As someone who has always worked in fitness, I’m truly impressed with this product. There are so many applications I see in my business, but even more importantly for my clients.
Well done exer
@zawthet@dshan and @movewithexer team, congrats! @clint_gehde, you've coached me everyday for >400 planks and counting. Thanks! Looking forward to the Studio app.
Feeling this product! Virtual workouts feel really alone... they're convenient, yeah, but there's so much you're missing out by not being with a live coach. Very creative how you've solved that problem and couldn't be more timely. Nice work!
Congrats on the launch! This looks like a super cool Mac app, especially in these trying times. Super excited to try it out and give feedback on the experience :D
@johoseff We'll be sharing exclusive free virtual fitness classes with our studio partner Sweat from Home next week so you can try it out, looking forward to hearing your feedback!
@sarah_anawalt Thx Sarah - indeed it does, and we may or may not be considering throwing a big 'home workout in skivvies' competition using Studio just to prove it. 👀
Congrats on the launch @zawthet@dshan@clint_gehde and the Exer team! What you guys are doing for the fitness industry is pretty magical. It has been ready for transformation for a long time.
You are empowering trainers and coaches with the tech tools to thrive and connect and build their businesses while we all get great workouts outside the traditional gym. Everyone matters in this model. Love it.
Your AI is pure wizardry. Brilliant. I'm also so impressed how you were able to pivot on a dime and create something we all need right now!
Bravo! Can't wait for what's next.
What a better way to be a part of the fitness community, stay healthy, and have some fun while I'm stuck at home especially in times like these. I love it!
