Hey Product Hunt! Aman here, co-founder of Firebender (YC W24) with Kevin. We're extremely excited to launch Firebender, but our journey here took an unexpected turn.
A few months ago, we were developing Firebender OS, an AI-powered fork of Android. Inspired by the failed launches of Humane Pin and Rabbit R1, we aimed to build better functionality by focusing on AI software and leveraging existing superior hardware. We rooted Pixel 8s and created an AI assistant activated by holding the power button. It automated tasks like drafting calendar invites and messages, opening relevant transportation apps based on location and schedule, and overriding the Google Gemini assistant with the best AI models.
Despite using it every day, we didn't LOVE the product, which led us to consider a new direction.
Throughout this process, we constantly struggled without a good AI coding assistant for Android development. We discovered that Android developers are often overlooked regarding AI-powered development tools. This became clear as we heard from frustrated devs about existing tools:
"GPT4 and Claude were clueless about the Android UI framework we use." - Senior Staff Android Eng at Airbnb
"Gemini and Copilot are comically bad. I never use them" - Android Tech Lead at GoodRx
This revealed a clear opportunity, so we pivoted to Firebender, the most powerful AI coding assistant for Android developers.
Firebender offers:
π Lightning-fast assistance right in Android Studio
π‘ Up-to-date Android knowledge
π¨οΈ Contextual understanding of your codebase, logs, and emulator
βοΈ Intelligent code suggestions and modifications
And the best part? It's free and privacy-first - we don't log, store, or persist your code.

Firebender is a game-changer for Android developers! With AI-powered assistance directly in Android Studio, it simplifies codebase navigation, log analysis, and quick edits, making development faster and smarter. Excited to see how it enhances productivity!
Wow, @amangotchu, Firebender sounds like a groundbreaking step forward for Android developers!
It's clear that you and Kevin have tapped into a much-needed space for AI-powered tools tailored specifically for Android Studio. The fact that Firebender offers real-time, contextual assistance while respecting user privacy is genuinely impressive. It's refreshing to see a tool that not only understands the unique challenges Android devs face but also actively addresses them with up-to-date knowledge and intelligent code suggestions. Looking forward to seeing how Firebender evolves and makes Android development more efficient and enjoyable.
Kudos to you both for pivoting so effectively and creating something that truly empowers developers!
Just picked up Android after 5+ years, and Firebender is the only reason I was able to deploy a basic crud app in 2 hours :) well done @kevo1ution@amangotchu looking forward to see what's next
@illiana_reed time to learn how to build android apps and jetpack compose multiplatform ;) but yeah building for android developers is way more fun for us. wouldn't be surprised to see something like this coming out for XCode in the future
I love the focus on contextual understanding of code, logs, and even the emulator, so practical! How does Firebender handle more complex debugging tasks?
@jackielinecosares Debugging is an important, open research problem in the AI coding assistant space! We currently are limited by how well the base model can fix a problem with a human in the loop, but we're working on improvements!
@amangotchu Do you think about any platform risks? What if Google implements this as a feature in Android Studio? I know that big corporations are slow to implement features.
@dhaouadi_kassem While the risk is real that's the game we're willing to play. Google has failed to push a usable version Gemini assistant in Android Studio for almost 2 years and we were able to build a better experience in only a few weeks.
We have ideas around building a new AI mobile development IDE forked from Android Studio to remove some of this platform risk as well.
@dhaouadi_kassem@amangotchu basically what amans saying is gemini is shit, and they have bigger problems to worry about (e.g. openai chatgpt beating search)
Firebender seems like a major time-saver for Android developers! Awesome!
I love the idea of AI-powered code insights and automated debugging directly within Android Studio.
How well does the log analyzer work with large projects, and can it handle complex errors efficiently?
