Flux is one of my favorite finds on Product Hunt so far. I love the moment my screen dims at ~5:30pm. So relaxing.

@rrhoover game changer

@rrhoover May I also suggest you also Iris :) https://www.producthunt.com/post... I also included 1000 free activation codes in the comments. Some things you may like is the ability to lower the brightness also automatically based on the time of the day. And customizing day start and end times via the clock. You can also customize the transition duration for the effect. I really like the easy to use interface of ProductHunt. Great work :)

@rrhoover 5:30? What time do you go to bed?

I work on my computer for hours in the evenings, and this has been a life-changer in order to fall asleep at night. @herf, I feel like I owe you. This product ROCKS. 🙌

Been a user of Flux for a very long time now and I can't think of a better alternative.

Pros:

Saves my eyes.

Cons:

Can't really complain if it actually saves my eyes.

This is a great tool, but like Apple's Night Shift mode, it's important to turn it off if doing any art, like painting, drawing or editing photos.

Used this and loved this for years. I've yet to use it on my phone, but certainly a must for all day at the monitor.

It helps to understand the science. Blue lights suppress melatonin, which keeps you from going to sleep when you want to. This is why staring at screens before bed = no good. F.lux works by filtering out blue light. You get a red hue to your screen which takes getting used to, but it seriously makes it easier to go to bed if you're using your computer late at night. There's a similar Android app as well, that I highly recommend. Game changer.
Daniel Georgiev
@sethporges Yes, I would also add that blue light is the highest-energy visible light and in the long run may cause age-related macular degeneration.

Honestly, if I was to buy a new computer, this is the first thing I would download.

Although Apple and Google have integrated blue light filters into their operating systems, they still haven't matched the capabilities that f.lux offers. f.lux gives you more control over the filter strength and once setup, you don't need to touch.

Pros:

I'm not wide awake before I go to sleep.

Cons:

It's not possible to do design work with a blue light filter

Flux was the pioneer in the "let's save your eyes from blue light" space. And even to this day, native vendor solutions don't come close! (I'm looking at you, Android and WIndows)

This product is a must have. Tim Ferriss first turned me onto it. I will say that if you are using it and gaming or anything visually demanding... Remember to turn it off to check designs. If you are gaming or watching a movie. It will cause your screen and graphics card to stutter as nightfall hits.
Daniel Georgiev
@thewillrobins You can fix this by setting longer transition time. If you like f.lux maybe you will also like my software called Iris https://www.producthunt.com/post... It's really nice alternative. I included free activation codes in the comments :)

Love this. The trend for letting technology adapt to us as users and the context (time, location, environment) we are in is a good one!

Long time user here & love the app & its soothing effect. Though I couldn't really find information on the wave length and frequency of the light emitting from the screens and the the difference created. ie, AFIK light of around 390 nm wave length seems to activate the serotonin switch (of the serotonin - melatonin pathway) & thus reduces prevents melatonin production (Eyes > Ganglion cells > optical nerves SCN > Pineal Gland). Do f.lux and similar products merely increase light in the high wave length parts (low frequency) so that for the visible eye its soothing ? Any pointers to analysis with say lightmeters/frequencies / comparison of frequencies etc ? Just curious.

I love f.lux. I swear it has improved my sleep cycle and reduced guilt for those evenings I need to be on the computer. I do have to remember to turn it off when dealing with product designs, photos etc - but that's the only inconvenience with the product, really.
John Faig

I like the gradual blue light reduction. It is also a visual reminder that I should be winding down for bed.

Pros:

Works well and I like the disable for 1-hour option

Cons:

None on Windows

Definitely one of the first apps I suggest to anyone who buys a Mac. Can't use my machine now without it running of an evening!
Jordan Metzner
@rrhoover no idea how it live without it.... @liveink me tooo but i figured there were some noobs here ;)

Great application and so simple to activate/deactivate, I've been using it for years. I think this is good for my eyes especially as I spend lots of time on my computer in the evening. Better disable it if you are watching a movie or working on photo/image/video!
Daniel Georgiev
Hi, I just published a nice alternative to f.lux here in ProductHunt https://www.producthunt.com/post... Gives you the ability to add third transition time. Select a list of programs to pause the colors and works with DisplayLink monitors. Comparison article between Iris and f.lux can be found here https://iristech.co/best-alterna...

I've been using f.lux for a few years already. Thank you, guys, for making a product that takes care of my eyes :)

Really great app. Super minimal and straight forward experience. Once opened, the app works from the top menu bar of macOS. There are a ton of adjustments you can make from there. You can chose from one of the preset settings or you can customize your own settings until you’re comfortable. Once you do, you never have to worry about the app again. Your eyes will be saved, and on top of that you might even help other people out as well because when f.lux kicks in, people notice and ask me where they can download it from. So I definitely recommend this app, especially to anyone who works at night!

P.S. Feature request: a shortcut button that allows me to view my screen normally, while I’m holding those buttons down. I’m a designer, so colors are important to me but I don’t want to have to open the app, disable f.lux and then reenable it again. Just quickly/temporarily turn it off, and once I let go of those buttons it turns back on.

Pros:

It’s like Apple’s Night Shift feature...but on steroids! The temperature adjustability settings are powerful and scheduling works perfectly!

Cons:

There a preset settings there - I wish the benefits of those settings or the reasons why they were chosen were clear. They seem arbitrary.

After getting used to and now loving Night Shift on my iPhone, found this and rushed to PH to post it here since I wasn't sure it was here, but of course it was. What a great product!
