Thanks for posting Ben! Frame.io CEO here. This was a huge release for us (our biggest yet). It was also our first major release since vastly expanding the engineering team so a major win for us. Hope everyone likes it!
Great video and great product. Emery: wondering if you could mention briefly what your production process was for this demo video: tools, editing, scripting. A lot of folks here in the PH community would benefit from that info. Keep up the good work!
@michaelgrant Sure thing Michael. Although our team has grown substantially (now 25) we don't yet have a marketing team.
I kick the process off by writing the script. This is usually fairly quick and the least painful part of the process. I try to write in a clear, simple, and relatable tone. Aside from being CEO, my other role is Chief Product Officer so Im incredibly close to every tiny detail. I then spend the next 27 years listening to music. My go to stock music sources are The Music Bed, Premium Beat, and Pond 5. Music selection is tough. It often takes weeks of listening (no exaggeration) to find something perfect although occasionally you can get lucky. This was not one of those cases :)
We then start looking for the content we are going to show in the video. This is tough. Stock tends to look like stock so we try to find stunning footage from real projects. We ask our friends and sometimes combine it with a bit of stock to hopefully create a project that looks relatable to any type of video creator. Internally this takes the longest time and we're quite picky about what constitutes great demo material.
Once script, music, and footage are selected, I usually read the script to give our VO talent an idea of the vibe and tone. Lucky for us, our VO talent happens to be my executive assistant, Michelle. She's a singer and VO artist on the side and her voice is our secret weapon. I absolutely love her voice.
Now we have VO, music, and footage which we hand off to one of our engineers who has was a professional visual effects artist in a prior life. Our product videos have always been real screen recordings. There are pluses and minuses to doing real screen recordings VS animating everything in After Effects but screen recordings net out to be a lot faster/easier to do. When doing real screen recordings, you have to choreograph your mouse movements absolutely perfectly. You mess up, a lot.
Thomas (our animator turned engineer) will do the screen recordings and put a rough cut together to time things out. He's based in Germany so we use Frame.io to go back and forth several times. We had about 15 versions of the product launch video before it was complete. Once timing and content is approved, Thomas then composites the browser into the pretty desktop environment. The two reasons it looks so slick and smooth are:
1. We record the screen at 60fps. Buttery smooth.
2. We cut up the mountains in the background to create a parallax effect. It's subtle but sweet.
Thomas does the edit and animation in Apple's Final Cut Pro and Motion. He's animating a 3D camera around the interface which makes it feel like you're just floating through the app. Sometimes we do these in After Effects as well. All depends on the job. Im obviously bias here (no surprise) but Frame.io plays a key role in our ability to go back and forth and really nail every detail.
@emerywells this part: 2. We cut up the mountains in the background to create a parallax effect. It's subtle but sweet.
- is VERY sweet. got my attention :)
ps: thanks for the great service, I use it daily
I used to use Frame.io everyday when I hired a freelance video editor for my YouTube channel. It made the workflow process much quicker than manually saying what I wanted fixed. I can only imagine the benefits for larger teams. Love this product and the new features!

Frame.io is by far THE BEST way to collaborate on video and animation projects. V1 was an industry game changer, and V2 keeps everything we loved about the first generation (but better) + adds tons of new features and product improvements. What else can we ask for? Keep up the great work guys.
Hi, I really like the idea and possibilities of Frame.io – especially for music collaboration. Is there any chance you could add waveform view for audio files, please? That would be awesome! 💜
HUGE fan of Frame.io, it truly improved my whole post production workflow! I love these new features, especially the loop option (a must have for a VFX artist like myself).
Congrats!!
