Spacelift recently conducted a survey among 1,142 tech professionals about - Stress in the IT Sector. If you haven't yet, check it out (link in the comments).
One interesting data point according to the survey is, 62% of DevOps professionals admitted playing video games is the #1 stress-relieving activity for them. In fact, 45% of tech professionals agreed to the same. DevOps professionals are the most solitary group in IT. There are often ongoing builds/logs that they need to monitor for hours just to find out a simple error or to make a slight change.
DevOps is the 2nd most stressed area in IT. Working in various DevOps roles since the ansible days, I can totally attest to that. I remember writing playbooks from scratch for a week straight and the next week found myself completely unstable to work with something else.
Games help DevOps professionals not only to pass time but often stay laser-focused on their job. The interactive challenges, small wins, and tactical interactions keep them motivated and help to spot DevOps issues quickly. Pairing with advergames, this can be an effective strategy to keep the in-house DevOps team productive or introduce them to new technologies.
5 ways to make advergames effective for DevOps professionals -
1. Company specific branded games will certainly build a rapport and help them fight work-related stress. A game portal with a collection of easy-to-play games can be a compelling solution.
2. Subconscious awareness about a new product/solution - DevOps professionals are often averse to embracing a new solution unless its widely adopted. Advergames with strategic product placements can help them to understand the use cases.
3. A boring documentation vs customized advergame - a 300-page long documentation will certainly help but delivering the core messages with a customized advergame can be more thrilling.
4. Tradeshow advergames - DevOps related tradeshows are fast-paced. In fact, the same is true for most tech conferences. Remembering what's happening where and why a DevOps product exists can be stressful for attendees. Advergames can help to stand out, collect leads through a leaderboard, and connect with prospects at a later time.
5. A quick stress relief mechanism - most DevOps professionals work on MacOS or run several background activities/programs on their PCs. Browser-based advergames can help to deal with anxiety instead of starting a full-fledged AAA title. In a scientific study, 97.5% of participants agreed advergames helped them to reduce stress.
Advergaming is one of the most unique methods of communication. There is certainly an opportunity for DevOps companies to take advantage of advergames and use them to promote products, make a deep subconscious connection, and helping professionals to fight work-related pressure.
