front-end and back-end developers, is it a love/hate relationship?

I guess this question is geared more towards CTO's, but I was wondering what your experience has been like working with both front end and back end developers. how often do these teams directly communicate in your organization and what systems have you put in place to ensure that development is headed in the right direction and pacing according to (closest to) the original timeline you had set.
