When building a product roadmap, it's important to prioritize features and initiatives that will provide the most value to your customers and business.
How do you prioritize πππ
First, we prioritize features and initiatives that directly address the needs and pain points of our customers. This involves gathering feedback from our user base through surveys, customer interviews, and other means, and using that feedback to identify the most important features and improvements that we can make.
Next, we consider market trends and competitor analysis to ensure that our product roadmap is aligned with the broader market landscape. This involves monitoring industry trends, identifying gaps in the market, and developing features and initiatives that can help differentiate our product from competitors.
Finally, we take into account our business objectives and goals when prioritizing features and initiatives. This involves evaluating the potential impact of each feature on our business metrics, such as customer acquisition and retention, revenue, and profitability.
By combining these factors and taking a data-driven approach to prioritization, we are able to ensure that our product roadmap is aligned with the needs of our customers, the broader market landscape, and our business objectives. This enables us to deliver a product that is both valuable to our customers and successful in the marketplace.
In short, this is how I'm doing it
- List some features based on the users feedback and my assumption
- Measure the each difficulty and importance
- Sort it by highest "importance" and lowest "difficulty"
The most critical thing is to make sure you understand your north star metric (NSM). Once you are clear on that, roadmap prioritization becomes about "juice to squeeze" towards that north star i.e. cost (people resources + financial) of each initiative against the projected impact on your NSM.
Low cost / high NSM impact should ideally be closer to the top, high cost / low NSM impact should ideally be closer to the bottom.
We definitely take feedback from users into maximum consideration. Additionally the existing reception of features and the product also shapes the immediate set of features.
