This is an awesome question. I always try to play into interest and then get something that they would never get themselves.
I'm thinking about getting my sister a picnic basket because she lives on the West Coast and loves to hike. I'm got my brother a subscription to nice coffee since he really likes different/complex roasts.

@vladimir_demchuk No kids yet, but if you can, I'd take the same approach. Something unique from an area of interest of theirs.
@jake_gutstein what do you think about a real 3D cartoon where the main character will be the child himself?
