My Thoughts:
Managers untangle you out of situations, but they tend to be reactive. Leaders are more proactive and inspire you to do better.
Managers accompany you for small segments of your career. Leaders tend to remain inspirationally relevant over a long period of time.
Many average performers seek managers who can protect them, while most top performers seek leaders who can challenge them.
Managers help. Leaders inspire.

For me, I think having contagious passion for Design Managers and Design Leaders goes such a long way to keep the teams inspired and energised.

Passion, with a tinge of obsession, is a great combination in my opinion. The obsession to grow, develop and bring out the best in people is what I would look for in a leader who'd be guiding me.
Leader inspires with vision, to make that we walk in this together, that our works are for a greater purpose and we own it together. Always telling why and making sure you understand the rationale of a task/direction they give.
