So I've been seeing a couple of posts here lately that either ask if ChatGPT will replace Google or outright make the claim that it will.
Here's why that assumption is mostly likely false.
So the only way ChatGPT replaces Google is if it's better overall in a significant way. Considering Google is an extremely versatile tool, you would have to do almost everything better to beat it.
But there's a few crucial aspects where ChatGPT lags behind which are inherent limitations that'll likely never change.
1. Google is free.
Perhaps the biggest one. ChatGPT is also free, but it won't be for long. OpenAI is running on Microsoft Azure, and computing costs are quite costly. Google will be free forever, and the ad revenue more than pay for the server and indexing costs, which even then are far lower than computing costs.
2. Google has a diversity of sources.
ChatGPT will only return one answer. And if it does return multiple, it won't nearly be as many as Google. This is great if you're looking for a wikipedia-esque summary, but terrible if you're trying to find multiple sources. Google does this much better, with hundreds of pages of sources returns in a single search.
3. ChatGPT has strict content filters
Being something where all the content is produced by the AI, it would be extremely bad publicity for OpenAI if someone received an inappropriate result or dangerous suggestion from ChatGPT. So extensive filtering must be in place.
However, Google, being merely an indexer of websites, is much less responsible for people accessing problematic websites, since the content is not their own.
So if someone wants to access less PG content, then ChatGPT is a no-go, and likely will be for a while.
4. Ease of use
A smaller one, but you have to log in to use ChatGPT, but Google can be accessed much faster. They also force you to provide them your phone number. I hate to say "Google has better privacy" in a sentence, but this time it's true.
So although ChatGPT has marked advantages over Google which I'm sure you're all already familiar with, it will not be a replacement, but rather a supplement.
Google is likely developing their own similar AI as we speak, and it'll be a supplement to Google search.
