So, which is it? Upvotes or comments?

49
Product Hunt is a haven for makers and hunters alike, but there's one question that has divided the community for far too long: which is better, upvotes or comments? Some argue that upvotes are the ultimate sign of approval, a badge of honor that shows that a product is truly worthy of attention. Others believe that comments are more valuable, as they provide deeper insights and feedback that can help makers improve their products. But what's the real answer? Is there one metric that reigns supreme? Or is it all about balance? Let's dive into this heated debate and see what the Product Hunt community has to say.

I am following this with interest! From previous makers who have launched, I have heard that a lot of engagement on your launch page can actually help you to rank higher?! There was one post that said that comments are equivalent to 3 upvotes, but I have never seen that said again or anywhere else online. However, it stuck with me as something to think about. It's a hard balance right - make it into the top 5 and you are on the front page, get picked up my newsletters and other media outside of PH but getting good quality feedback is worth it's weight in gold.

@carolmoh I heard that 1=3 thing as well, but recently some makers told me it's BS

Sorry to break it to you, but there is no correct answer to this. While upvotes might seem like the obvious metric since they are so easy to count, PH has been working tirelessly to filter out "bought" or bot/suspiciously new account upvotes - so 100 upvotes may actually carry the weight of 80. Comments also seem to be weighted based on quality, length, rewards, and some other secret qualities - so not all comments are equal. That being said, what you should strive for is to get meaningful comments from real users as well as steer clear of the upvote sellers/hustlers. Follow the launch guidelines as closely as possible as there seems to be active moderation of late as well. If a product is good enough, it will naturally rank well, gaming the system is a fool's errand.

@izakotim "Comments also seem to be weighted based on quality, length, rewards, and some other secret qualities - so not all comments are equal." - This is super interesting and good to know! Thanks for sharing 🙏
good question and wondering about this too...in my opinion (not yet launched on PH), i value honest feedback more since i am here to understand product market fit. so the more feedback it is better...

@mehmet_yitmen1 Absolutely agree. Honesty is the secret sauce for growth. Upvotes are like the cheers from the crowd, but honest feedback? That's the backstage pass to refining your masterpiece. Here's to the pursuit of the perfect product, market tango, may your feedback be candid and your launch legendary.

Comments, comments, comments! :D I don't care about "likes"; I want meaningful conversations.

Maybe it's not an either/or scenario.

Great, I'm not the only one who's been struggling with this question!

Having been observing PH its only the products with most upvotes that end up in the top 4 products. Even if they dont necessarily have a lot of comments.

Upvotes gets you higher. Comments give you an opportunity to learn and maybe even an insight that can help you to improve. So, the Upvotes are valuable but passive the Comments are valuable and active. "Upvotes AND Comments" 😉

I think the comments' priority is higher than upvotes. In my view, upvote is about awareness, while people comment on your product page, they will always give some feedback about your product. Which has more value.

Comments without question. We learned pretty quickly in our launch last week how valuable comments were

We are launching soon, so I am reaaaally interested from expert answers here

I completely understand the dilemma between upvotes and comments on Product Hunt. It's a tough call to determine which one holds more weight. Personally, I believe that both upvotes and comments are important in their own ways. Upvotes can signify a general interest and approval of your product, showing that it has caught the attention of the community. On the other hand, comments provide valuable insights and feedback that can help you improve and iterate on your product. They offer a deeper level of engagement and give you a chance to directly connect with your potential users.

Balance. A very fine balance with users also being given weight. No two votes or comments carry the same weight!
