Technical founders (engineers) would greatly benefit from having designers on their team.

It depends what you mean by designer, if the user experience is smooth then the design can always come later, pretty colours doesn't remove the value of a product, however if it's to design the user experience then this is a very important part of a product. Difficult to use products never last long
