hey product hunters,
I just started to manage my small marketing team,
Would love to learn things that I need to avoid to keep the energy and motivation just right.
Thank you!
Hi @aidai_zu congratulations on your management role. Things to avoid:
- Micromanaging
- Not delegating things you can already do blindfolded
- Continually moving the goalposts
- Closing down ideas too quickly
- Not setting goals
- Not knowing what makes your team tick individually
@daniel_craig Hi David, thank you for this support!
Looks like you're good in it. So much appreciate your advice. What do you mean by closing down ideas too quickly
@aidai_zu remember when you had a great idea and you were given a flat no, or told all of the reasons it wouldn't work? Remember how that felt? Don't do that :)
In creative sessions (which you'll have a lot of as a Marketing team!) I've often used Six Thinking Hats (https://www.njdiaries.com/2016/0...) to manage enabling great ideas, while also pinning down which of those is the most likely to succeed.
It gives the team and individuals license to be free and create new ideas without the risk of being shut down, but also gives you the controls, checks and balances to avoid spending time on the ideas which might not go anywhere.
There are generally no bad ideas, just sometimes ideas at the wrong time, place or context.
