Reels invites you to create fun videos to share with your friends or anyone on Instagram. Record and edit 15-second multi-clip videos with audio, effects, and new creative tools.
Timely launch with all the heat on TikTok over the past few weeks. Many creators and consumers are worried the app will get banned in the US (following India's suite) leading to a surge in downloads for Triller, byte, Clash, and other creative video platforms.
Unlike some of its previous expansions Threads and Direct, Instagram decided to bundle Reels into its main app.
I'm very curious to see if this becomes their next Stories or IGTV. Wdyt? Will Instagram Reels exist and thrive 1 year from now?
@rrhoover definitely has the potential to stay but don't think it's going to capture the same "feeling" as using TikTok. It boils down to how users are being presented content and that's something that TikTok does very well, letting users discover content based on their interests and not so much on who their following, sponsored posts, etc.
If IG modifies the explore function (something similar to FYP on TikTok), then I think IG might have an edge. Facebook Group is fighting for dominance in video, messaging and data with many users already using one of their apps for daily communication. The future potential is what makes Reels dangerous, if executed and "updated" correctly.
@rrhoover If you can contact them and let them know that Instagram Reels needs a change in UI. There is a reason why TikTok placed the Like, Comment and Share button on the right and not at the bottom. There is a reason why there exists a rotating disc at the bottom right corner of TikTok. I didn't expect such a bad product in terms of UI from Facebook.
Looking forward to giving Reels a try
Small nitpick: one thing I’m missing from the official announcement/communication is the basic answer to “where/when” is Reels available.
(also would help to be over-explicit re whether this is a stand-alone app or part of an Instagram update)
The idea to incorporate it directly into the app is smart. Leveraging the already existing audience. Although not sure about how serendipitous it will be in comparison which is arguably a huge benefit of TikTok
TikTok thrives through an incredible discovery algorithm and a false sense of influence/popularity. Any video can go viral at any moment. Reels will be nothing compared to TikTok unless Instagram recreates this as well.
@thejfkshow "False sense of influence/popularity" is so accurate. In terms of "Any video can go viral at any moment," not so much.
"They provide users with a taste of virality to entice them to stay on the platform. Your first post will likely garner quite a bit of likes, regardless of how good it is..." https://www.boredpanda.com/tik-t...
It's just a ploy to get people to stay on the platform. Facebook did it in some earlier days as well. Don't fall for it.
Organic reach is dead.
@ucefkh Simple--because social media is run by the largest ad platforms in the world. We are the product first and foremost. Only some are the customers.
So if organic isn't reaching the audiences you want, you're more likely to pay these ad platforms (Facebook, Google, Amazon) in order to reach those audiences that you want.
If organic reach dominated, it would mean less revenue for the ad platforms.
@hiramfromthechi okay got it, so say I got a social network made or a video app like pikpok, how would I get users? should i fake it like they did or how exaaactly? I am always stuck at that part! no marketing budget too
@thejfkshow@hiramfromthechi Organic reach is dead until a new platform with early traction shows up. As of now, viral traction on TikTok is stupid easy compared to other platform and extends past just the "first post".
Instagram is copying so much successful apps & features that you might think they are just copying WeChat after all.
I guess that is just how app darwinisme works so good for them 😂
@amrin My product was #1 on PH today until ig has revealed its one more brand new copy of something :) It's especially fun for me because I do love Tik-Tok :)
Is there a downvote? Because even after me pressing the 'Not interested' button over and over again, Instagram keeps showing me the same/similar Reels content. Have started hating my Search tab because of this feature.
I think it is not useful to be integrated in the Instagram app. It is a feature competing with a platform. Platform will win. Same way Stories never really took off completely and Snapchat is still widely used.
