Is this like the ODEO idea in an app?
Kevin Kliman
@bramk YA, pretty spot on.
Bram Kanstein (@bramk)
@kkliman what are you doing different? remembering ODEO didn't work out. Perhaps timing is more right? Any other advantages? cc @stuartgoldfarb

@bramk @kkliman i definitely see this in a similar light as Bram. What is going to make this succeed?
Kevin Kliman
@bramk @stuartgoldfarb Timing is an important piece. 1. There are 3 Billion + connected mobile microphones now. 2. The audience sizes and consumption time is exponentially bigger. 3. Audio is inherently not viral, so its really important to have a strong social graph built out (...Twitter needed to exist for ODEO to work). What is different (besides the aforementioned) - the live aspect. The best audio content is long form. Broadcasting live removes the friction of editing (which can take an hour for a ten min cast), and creates an authentic feel for the audience. It also creates a number of opportunities to build interesting creator-audience interactions. What is going to make this succeed (without exposing our product roadmap and growth strategy) 1. Broadcasting that is simple enough for anyone to use and create compelling content with. 2. Leveraging other platforms well. 3. Interesting content creators. 4. Powerful discovery and community building on the platform.

1) tell us a bit about the market and the opportunity here? 2) who are your biggest competitors and why are you better? what do you think of what alex blumberg is creating?
Kevin Kliman
@stuartgoldfarb Spoken audio is one of the last major mediums to be democratized. connected phones and cars there will drive huge audiences. Alex and the Gimlet team are going to build an awesome content company. We want to build the tech that enables millions of Alex Blumberg s to tell stories and create compelling audio content.

@kkliman not sure I'm seeing this as more than a feature for other products - help me understand how this stands on its own
Kevin Kliman
@stuartgoldfarb Its a very different consumption experience to optimize for. Most optimize for screen time. We succeed when content is found quickly and the audience can put their device away.

@stuartgoldfarb I see us more as a firehose for audio, similar to what Twitter did for RSS
Kevin Kliman
@stuartgoldfarb One interesting use case we've seen starting to gain momentum is people broadcasting while watching sports on TV. Image how cool it would be to watch a game and hearing Melo's commentary at the same time. He can use the app to turn his mic on and broadcast live audio to his twitter and Facebook followers. Essentially becoming a colour commentator while sitting on the couch.
