๐Ÿ‘‹ Intro As a serial startup founder and someone who has been learning English for 20 years, I'm aware of the difficulties of regularly practicing a new language. Approximately 760 million English First Language speakers like me are motivated to learn the language, but not motivated enough to change our habits and practice it regularly. One of the reasons for the difficulty with regular practice is that it's challenging for an adult city dweller to embed a new activity or habit, in our case, learning a language, into the established mode of life. ๐Ÿ“บ Watching videos to learn English After much experimentation, I found that incorporating my English learning into my daily routine was possible by watching videos in English. This allowed me to enjoy my spare time while improving my language skills. However, if you're not fluent in the target language, stopping to check unfamiliar words ruins the pleasure of watching, and we are first and foremost watching, and then learning. Not checking unfamiliar words also means missing context, often important context. ๐Ÿ” Existing solutions Upon reviewing the existing solutions, I found that most language platforms or advanced competitors were too complicated to use, which meant that the desire to use them quickly came to naught. ๐Ÿ’ก Our Solution Our goal is to create a complete solution that simplifies the discovery of unknown words in videos and makes it easy to learn them later, with unobtrusive help and hints from AI based on statistics. ๐Ÿ‘‰ What we have so far: Google Chrome extension that works on YouTube, Netflix, Coursera (with more platforms to come) * Instant word translation on hover or click, including context * Automatic saving of viewed words with context into your personal vocabulary * Personal account with viewed/saved words and statistics * Mobile apps for memorizing words * Weekly digest of frequent words * Free and premium plans ๐Ÿ“ What is in the plans: * Automatic detection of phrasal verbs and other strong expressions * Support of Safari, desktop and mobile versions * Coverage of major streaming and educational platforms * Editing of saved words/phrases in the personal account * Different modes of playing captions and showing translations ๐Ÿ™ The ask. And give :) We would love to hear your thoughts, questions, and feedback, so we can continue to improve the product. We appreciate constructive criticism, but please don't throw tomatoes at us just yet! As a token of our appreciation, we're offering 2 weeks of full access for those of our PH users who activate the code: PH2WEEKS. Or follow this link: https://app.intersub.cc/en/check.... P.S. Huge thanks to @kevin for hunting us today. We greatly appreciate your support! ๐Ÿคฉ

As a maker, I'm proud to announce the launch of another edutainment project - InterSub which helps people elevate their language learning while watching videos. It was a long journey with lots of UX and technical experiments, and I love the final product. However, we're constantly looking for your feedback and for improvement ideas for further development inspirations. Feel free to share it in your comments. Also, check the Kirill's intro post for more details and for a special offer for PH users.

I love that you can get the word translation with one click. I sometimes find myself pausing a movie just to Google "word + definition". Your solution is so much easier and less time-consuming. Congrats on the launch!
Dennis Crane
@heleana It's awesome you liked it. Thanks for your support.
Usama Ejaz

Congtrats on the launch! This tool looks like actually useful browser extention ๐Ÿ™‚ Good luck with the development
Dennis Crane
@medik Thanks for the inspirational feedback!
Laisan Shafikova
@dennis_crane congratulations on the launch! This tool looks very interesting - if not for learning English, but definitely for translating. I've tested in on Youtube and my favorite part is that it pauses video on hover on a new word and automatically starts again. Great usability!
Dennis Crane
@laisan Thank you for such detailed feedback and for giving the product a real try.
Sneha Saha

Looks very intriguing! Wondering what age this will be most appropriate for as a teaching solution. Can my 7-year benefit from it?
Kirill Rozhkovskiy
@new_user_121572d59e Emin, we think InterSub would be beneficial for those who have at lease B1 language level. Because there are too many unknown words for low levels, and the process of checking them will negate the fun of watching the video.
Leena Jose
@mujaji , indeed an awesome product. Will surely check it out and suggest those who may need this the most. Wishing you all the best for this one.
Kirill Rozhkovskiy
@leena_jose Thank you, Leena!

Exciting tool! I remember learning French by watching the same movie again and again. It was super useful, and I learned a lot of phrases, but I was constantly switching between that movie and a dictionary, it's a bit annoying. This tool looks really promising, and Spanish is my next language challenge!
Dennis Crane
@svetlana_zakharenkova Ola! Thanks and good luck with Spanish.

Wow, beautiful project, congratulations with launch, are you also planning to extend to other languages? I would appriciate to have such app for German
Kirill Rozhkovskiy
@natalia_akulova We have German :)
Kiv Aujla
This is super cool. As someone who's currently learning a new language and is always looking for ways to boost that learning (i.e., subtitles, Duolingo, talking to others, etc.), this is such a good idea. One big suggestion: add in an option to have the program "quiz" users every X minutes. E.g., when there are subtitles on screen, everything pauses, then it asks you to translate something, for the infinitive, to use X word that's on screen in a sentence, etc. Great idea, and congrats on the launch!! Looking forward to watching this one grow. :)
Kirill Rozhkovskiy
@kivaujla Kiv, thank you for your feedback. We'll think about this ๐Ÿ™

I have been planning to build something similar like this but for articles. Few ideas to share: 1. Build this for news and other articles too if no legal issue or support only allowed sites. 2. Create a flashcard system. Notify users to review words and context. 3. In the context highlight memorized words green, lesser known words yellow and red for words that user should know but might not based on his level. 4. Let them/ provide a set of goals for number of words to learn in a given timeframe. 5. Might use a leaderboard.
Kirill Rozhkovskiy
@shakur_shams_mullick Hey Shakur, thanks for your feedback! 2. Flashcards and different ways of memorizing words we see coming from connected mobile apps. We have one and working on bringing more. We also have a weekly digest with most checked words to remind to learn them first :) 1. We are thinking about extending the service to texts on any (or allowed) sites as the next step. This really sounds like an obvious thing :) As about the rest - for now we've decided not to overload users with gaming/play mechanics to make ours simple
Shakur Shams Mullick
@mujaji Are you planning to add support for French and Arabic? For me priority would be support for articles and French language. just FYI: reverso shows not only word meaning but also related grammar and etc. Maybe down the line something similar to that could be added too. best of luck.
Kirill Rozhkovskiy
@shakur_shams_mullick French and Arabic are supported. I think we should make a page with a whole list of supported languages :) There are now about a hundred dictionaries connected
Shakur Shams Mullick
@mujaji yeah the video thumbnail says English and Spanish that's why ... please share update when articles are supported. meanwhile will take it for a flight Inn Sha Allah.
ะœะฐั€ะบ ะ—ะธัะปะธะฝ
My sincere congratulations on the launch to the team! Wish you guys good luck ahead! And looking forward to the appearance of Hebrew in the list of avaliable languages.
Dennis Crane
@new_user__054202380935e7a6684a8f1 Thank you for your support and for the product improvement ideas. Much appreciated
Kirill Rozhkovskiy
@new_user__054202380935e7a6684a8f1 Thank you, Mark! Hebrew is supported, actually :) We definitely need a page with the list of all supported languages/dictionaries. Now there are about 100 of them connected. We wrote about just English and Spanish because they are the most popular
ะœะฐั€ะบ ะ—ะธัะปะธะฝ
@mujaji Wow, this is unexpectable! I'll try it for sure! But it's really better to do the list of supported languages because now it's not clear.
ะœะฐั€ะบ ะ—ะธัะปะธะฝ
@mujaji Thanks for sharing it! You've told above, that Hebrew is supported already, but I could not find it in the list. Could you please specify if it's realy already supported ot not?
Erin Anthony
What an awesome way for people to learn a new language! So convenient and customized. I wish I'd had something like this directly out of school. Never too late, though :)
Kirill Rozhkovskiy
@anth_e_m Erin, thanks for your feedback. I thought the same way about my early times of learning English - why I haven't had this thing then :)
Serge Borisov
Congrats on the launch, love the My Words integration. Any particular AI technology on the backend?
Kirill Rozhkovskiy
@asby thanks! AI is in plans yet. We want to find patterns in one's watching and gaps in a vocabulary, and recommend videos and exercises to watch to cover them.
Viktor Shishkarev
Great idea and nice pictures here!) Good luck! Is it possible to make it in safari later?
Dennis Crane
@viktor_shishkarev Thanks. We're going to add Safari and FF support also.
I believe that it is the best way to learn a new language. Way to go guys!
Kirill Rozhkovskiy
@sergeyone Thanks Serge!
Masha Plotkina
Good luck! Great idea and I like your visuals that you make)
