Klokki for Mac — Rule-based automatic time-tracking
Featured

Klokki was created to solve an annoying issue that many freelancer and makers face, which is forgetting to start and pause a timer, during the work. The solution is automation, but we knew that people still want to control what should be tracked. Enter — rule-based automatic time-tracking.

I'm a bit confused on how to set-up auto-tracking. I've tried setting up a rule for an Active Application - but each time I try to include that application, it removes the rule. Example: https://cl.ly/f7f892d66488 Request: Seems like it'd make sense to be able to track multiple applications using logic for the rules (e.g., I want to track when I'm using Superhuman OR Slack) so I can track the time I spend on communication.
Stas Moor
@gioismeyo Thank you, Nick, for the interest in the app! You just found a UX-flaw — very cool, because we weren't aware of it, but can now fix it. After you drag&drop an application into the Rule Configurator it sets the action to "Launched Application", but as soon as you change the action to "Active Application" it removes the entity because it thinks that you no longer need the "Launched Application"-action. You can still add the "Active Application"-action (via the plus button on the toolbar) and choose the application you need. Add a second "Active Application"-action to have both apps in the rule and then you will achieve exactly what you are asking for. Thank you for making me aware of the flaw! Get back to me, if you have further questions.

Just started using it and I am looking forward to the auto-track feature.

Literally perfect timing (pun intended!)! The European Court of Justice just announced companies in the EU will be required to track all sorts of work of employees in the future. Since I think that is some of a challenging task, I'm happy to see a tool that could make this a lot easier. I nowadays often forget to track my time when I'm working on something, this makes mistakes like that impossible. Great job!
Stas Moor
@sam0711er Sam, thank you so much for the kind words! 🤝 That is really an unexpected announcement from the Court. We will do our best to ship team capabilities, so people don't have to struggle with time-tracking!

I was a huge fan of the functionality and the design of TimePal when it was released. I truly enjoyed using it through the trial stage and it's absolutely beautiful. Still is as Klokki. The support from Stas was fantastic as well. The only issue I had that kept me from moving from Timing to TimePal/Klokki at the time is sync between Macs. I work on both an iMac and MBP, exporting and importing reports between the two would be too inconvenient to justify moving away from a system that handles that for me. With Timing, I can open it up on either machine, make adjustments, and both are in sync. That being said, I would use Klokki for time management without hesitation if I were using only a single machine. It's a great and truly beautiful app, and I highly recommend it. Congrats on the rebrand, Stas! Best of luck!
Stas Moor
@jeffdashley Thank you, Jeff! Great to see that you've enjoyed the app. Also awesome to hear that you were happy with the support I provided! I understand the need for syncing very well, and we will 100% move in that direction. But we are currently a small team of two, and sadly can only work on one thing at a time. But we are trying our best to move as fast as we can. Sorry for not having a more concrete answer at the moment. Thanks for the kind words, Jeff! 🤝
Jeff Dashley
@moorstas Totally understood. Thanks for the quick reply! I'll be keeping a very close eye on your progress.
Stas Moor
@jeffdashley Deal! 👍

Hello everyone! I'm Stas the Founder and Designer at Klokki. I am very excited to launch today and present to you Klokki the rule-based time-tracking for freelancers and makers. Our goal was to make time-tracking convenient and finally remove the need to start or pause a timer. Being a freelancer myself, time-tracking was always something that's in the way because you constantly need to think about it. And yet, it is still very important to have. To put it simply — time = money. So we thought, how can we solve that? Automation is, of course, the first thing that comes to mind. But all the tools that provide automatic time-tracking also take away the control over what I actually want to track and make the whole process of linking time to a project cumbersome. Therefore we've created "Auto-Tracking" which gives you the possibility to configure specific rules for your tasks. With this, you are able to tell Klokki that it should start tracking, as soon as you start working on file-x, or open site-y, or the combination of those two. We've included a variety of options that will give you endless configuration possibilities. But besides the Auto-Tracking capabilities, we also wanted to retain the advantages of manual time-tracking. Hence you still will able to use the traditional start/pause controls. This way you have the perfect balance of automation and full control over your timekeeping. And here are also some of the other features that Klokki has: * Reports that help you visualize and review your data * Flexible folders and tasks structure, which makes it super easy to manage your projects * Klokki lives in your Menu Bar with a convenient mini-tracker * Works offline * Beautiful design, that is natively built for the Mac * Billable hours are also coming very soon * …and much more I am looking forward to reading your feedback and questions, and hope that you'll give Klokki a try by downloading the free 30-day trial at klokki.com. We really put a lot of time, effort and love into developing the app, and hope that you have a great time with it! Thank you all in advance! --- P.S. For the purpose to clear things up in advance — Klokki is a relaunch of the Timepal project, which ended because of a split between co-founders. Therefore I apologize for any confusion this might cause you. And if you are a previous Timepal Pro user, you can switch to Klokki for free. Just write to me at contact@klokki.com to receive the license. I am happy to answer any questions you might have.

Klokki is the future of tracking everything what i’m doing in my macbook pro! I really love this app because it helps me to track all the softwares, apps and softwares i’m using for hours, days, weeks and month. This is one of the best MacOS app I ever seen! Congratulations on the launch!!! I can’t wait for more features too in the roadmap. Much love from Singapore 🇸🇬

Absolutely love this! Solves the biggest problem with time tracking!

@lachlankirkwood So awesome to hear your feedback! Thank you! 🤝

So timingapp.com has been on the market for years and is doing a phenomenal job at rule based tracking on Macs. Could you explain how Klokki wants to differentiate itself and where it could improve on current solutions like Timing?
Stas Moor
@davidm Thank you, David, for dropping by! Timing is a very good app and it is solving the issue its own way. What we are offering with Klokki is already different. We want to give the user the control to set up rules in advance and link those rules to specific tasks right away. Besides that, we also provide a super intuitive folders and tasks structure, which differs from the way how Timing does it, a lot. And you can also use the traditional start/pause controls, in cases when you just need a timer. We offer a free 30-day trial. So if you are interested, I welcome you to give it a shot and test the app for yourself. Please feel free to get back to me if you have further questions — happy to help out!

I really hope these things come out in the future and am very excited about this product, I am currently testing it out and may be replacing my previous time tracker.

Pros:

1. Auto-tracking is awesome. 2. The User interface is really good 3. It is super easy to get set up

Cons:

1. Auto-tracking is not very flexable. 2. There is no way to disable time overlapping.

Sharath Kuruganty
Thanks for building this! I have an app called Hourly, but this is even better as it sits on my Mac. Great execution, love the simple design which blends into Mac OS. Congrats overall 🎉🙌👏
Stas Moor
@5harath Awesome! Thank you so much for your feedback! Great to hear that you like the design, it was indeed our goal to make it feel at home in the macOS environment.
Hamish Johnson
Awesome! 👊🏼

Dariusz Baczyński
https://timemator.com/?ref=betalist Why do these applications look the same?
Stas Moor
@dariusz_baczynski As I mentioned in my post — Klokki is a relaunch of Timepal, because of a split between co-founders. So the app you are mentioning is made by my ex-business-partner. I apologize for the confusion!
Andrew-David
@dariusz_baczynski @moorstas So... you both basically re-released Timepal with your own brand tweaks and now people have to basically pick a side? They literally look like the exact same app. You guys should have handled the property a little better instead of both releasing the exact same thing.
Stas Moor
@dariusz_baczynski @andrewdavidj I fully understand your reaction and frustration with this. I wish it wouldn't be this way, but we sadly can not control everything. Give both apps a bit of time and they will become different.
Harry O'Brien
@dariusz_baczynski @andrewdavidj @moorstas how are the products going in different directions? What will you be focusing on in the next few years
Stas Moor
@dariusz_baczynski @andrewdavidj @harry_o_brien I am planning to build Klokki into a one-stop app for Freelancers and make Auto-Tracking as invisible as possible.
James Ivings
I've been using Klokki for a few weeks to track time spent on my main side product. I've thought about doing this before, but don't have the discipline to start and stop a timer all day. With this in mind Klokki's auto-tracking functionality is a killer feature for me! Since setting up I've been able to just get on with work and let Klokki do it's thing! Keep up the awesome work @moorstas ! 🎉
Stas Moor
@jamesivings Thank you, James! So happy to hear that Klokki is helping you! Makes me super happy 🙂
James Ivings

I'm using Klokki to keep track of my side spent on side projects and have had zero issues with it. It just works!

Pros:

Auto-tracking is flawless

Cons:

More export options and API support would be useful.

Osamah Aldoaiss

I have been working with Klokki for a while now and I loved it. It helped me keep track of the time spent on client projects. Exporting my reports to send to the client is easy as a breeze 🌊

Pros:

🗄Great way to categorise workflows and track the amounts worked on those tasks 💻Great UI 📊Great Reporting feature

Cons:

Nothing I can think of right now
