Say goodbye to frustrating, hard-to-remember keyboard shortcuts! Lasso solves the problem with an easy-to-use grid system where you can click and drag to move and resize windows.
Just installed and used for 5 minutes, and for me, this is a game changer. I have tried other window managers, but Lasso is by far the easiest to use IMHO. I was just going to purchase, but I noticed that there is a Personal License coming soon. What will be different to the standard license?
@craigcpaterson Thanks for your words! I really appreciate :) The difference would be in the number of activations you can make for one license code. It would be 3 - so that you can activate the same code for your own computer, the one you are using at work for instance, and one more.
@isapozhnik that’s great, thank you. Will it be available in the next 7 days? Or will it be later than that? I’d rather purchase the personal license than the standard 😉
@craigcpaterson Yes, Craig, it will be available (🤞🏻) within the next 7 days. I just need to check a couple of things to make sure that licensing is working as expected and will let you know here in the comments 😉
@isapozhnik my trial ran out, so I just went to see if the Personal License was available, and noticed there was an app update to accommodate the new Personal License. So I have purchased and activated, all good. Thank you again for creating this wonderful tool.
@craigcpaterson Hey! Yeah, I released it at night but actually forgot to mention it here. Looks like you had some error. I don't see this message here anymore. But the problem most probably was because you were trying to activate a Single license with a Personal license code. they are not compatible with each other. And btw since it's been already 7 days since the release, maybe you could already form an opinion about the app (what you like/don't like)? I would be happy if you could share it here https://www.producthunt.com/prod...
I really liked your website's demo video. It reminded me of https://lunar.fyi I wish more app developers would take the time to create a proper site rather than a basic splash page.
Congrats. That exactly what I expected since long time to manage windows with flexible grid and restore states, particular in the case where you switch between a laptop and a desktop display.
@plougy Thanks Aymeric! Yeah, state restoration is a common challenge that all window managers are trying to tackle. Mostly because the API that Apple provides to uniquely identify displays is not really reliable. Some apps are doing better than others but in general, it's a common issue. From my side, I will also invest some time and will research the state restoration topic deeper.
Absolutely fantastic, favorite app of the year so far 🎖️
Using a CMD (Apple Key) based hotkey seemed to work more responsively than using ALT or CTRL, which sometimes did not respond right away. Besides that, in love with the app, and excited to see it get fancier and faster over time.
What a beautiful little app, and the paddings / gap feature made this an instant buy for me personally. Congrats on the launch, and thank you for making this!!
@nikitapashinsky thanks Nikita! Those little windows btw have also some nice rubber effect when you exceed the maximum size. Feature that 99% of the users will never find but yep, it’s there 😄
@isapozhnik looks like it would make my life easier. Like today for example trying to do a zoom on one screen and open an email on the same screen but still want to make sure I’m good on camera. Yeah I’m looking into this today!
Hey all 👋🏻! It's Ivan, the developer 👨🏼💻 behind the Lasso app.
Let me introduce the app - window manager for macOS.
There are a lot of great apps out there that do the same thing - helping you to organize windows on your Mac. Magnet and Rectangle, Moom, and others. They all are wonderful apps. I've been using Rectangle myself for a few years and was ALMOST happy with it. So why do we need another window manager then? Let me just tell you my motivation - why I decided to make Lasso.
As I said, I've been using the Rectangle app for many years. Most of the time I was using my Mac and one 27" external monitor. When it comes to window layout, mostly, I've been using halves and full-screen options. With a relatively small monitor, it was super easy to just drag the window to the side to change the size. And of course, there are shortcuts I can use but I always had difficulties memorizing them especially when it's something more advanced (⌃⌥⇧ ↑ 🤯). But then I bought a 38” monitor I immediately realized that the layouts, I used to, were not enough. Sometimes I even had 6 windows in front of me which I was using simultaneously. Going every time to the app settings to check which keyboard shortcut to use to apply some specific layout was a huge productivity drop for me. One may say “yeah when you are looking for some more advanced layouts the learning curve might be steep”. But even after quite some time I still could not use these shortcuts. I’m not a ”keyboard” guy for sure 🤷🏼. So I decided to make my own app.
Since 1964, when the computer mouse was invented, clicks and drags are the most common way to communicate with the computer. In systems Finder you use click-n-drag to select multiple files, in computer games you use the same approach to select your characters (hello StarCraft fans 😉) and assign them to a specific location. So I wanted to bring the same mechanics to window management. That is how Lasso was born.
You may ask “How is this better than XYZ”?
Honestly, I can not answer that question since “better” is very subjective. Some people might be just fine with snapping windows to the edge of the screen, and some - are hardcore shortcut lovers. But I still believe that there are users that may find my app more convenient or simpler than others. At least I myself would be in that group 😄.
You also may ask “What makes it different from XYZ”?
This question I definitely can answer 😉. Well, obviously, the grid system. It’s super easy to use - you just click and drag selection across cells representing the area where the window should go. Have some layouts that you use often? You are covered here - you can save them directly in the app for quicker access. Feel that it’s time to boost your productivity with keyboard shortcuts - it’s also there. You can create custom layouts, assign shortcuts and use the app like any other window manager. For those coming from Rectangle or Magnet, there is even an onboarding step allowing to import of predefined shortcuts so that transition to Lasso does not feel stressful. Last but not least I would mention another great little touch. With Lasso you can move windows between screens - might be handy for those having big monitors.
When I was already 60% done with the app and while browsing the internet I found Divvy. Another great app that I would have used myself if I would find it earlier. Unfortunately seems abandoned nowadays but still works and has its own army of fans. You may find Lasso’s UI similar but I would say its because great minds think alike hehe 😉
In the Lasso app, there are also a lot of customization options: you can select the gutter around windows, which window should be resized (the active one or the one under the mouse), and many more - just try it yourself. The app has a trial period so you would have time to understand if you like it or not.
And last but not least, as a special thank you to the ProductHunt community, I'd like to offer 25% off the Lasso app with the code B1462B76 which is valid until 31.01.
I think it’s enough of an intro, if you still have questions - don’t hesitate to ask in the comments section, otherwise please check the app. Feature requests and bug reports are very welcome. For your (and for mine as well 😋) convenience I made a form you can submit directly from the app.
I will be around in the next couple of days to answer everyone.
Thank you! ❤️
@ramzesenok Thanks Roman! the initial was much simpler - I made a tiny app that resizes windows to some predefined sizes like SD, HD, UHD and so on so that when I'm sharing my screen during the call it looks good. But then I soon felt that the app is capable for more :)
@darren_hendley I just applied the coupon, a small "Add coupon" link appears after you select the billing country I believe (in the Paddle checkout window)
The app looks super slick! I was looking for such app last night before I went to bed and today this charm comes to my twitter feed and I'm loving itttt so far ..
@jatrini Hey! You were the luckiest guy to try things while I'm uploading the new version :D Please join the discord server for support if needed. https://discord.gg/SduAPceHGZ
