This is really cool. It’s a giant leap from what Breaker has been doing to bring people into the conversation with podcasts. The voice to text seems to work really well, and being able to listen and read people’s comments is really great. I had this vision of being able to engage in a walkie-talky like back and forth with other users about a podcast.
I had some issues importing podcasts from pocketcasts (no “copy to Listen” visible when exporting the pocketcast file).
I listen to copious amounts of podcasts and have a very specific workflow for queuing up what I want to listen to. I love Castro’s take on this with the inbox, as I can quickly queue up episodes that look interesting, and discard the rest. My queue is a mile long, but something that I value. I found it a bit cumbersome to queue up shows quickly from the “new show” view in Listen.
I also love to be able to play shows in different contexts, and would love to see Chromecast support.
In short, I’m definitely interested and look forward to using this app more. IMO for it to be successful, it has to knock a lot of the podcast fundamentals out of the park.
Oh, and the design is sexy AF!
@crixlet Aaron, thanks for the feedback, we're just getting started so thanks for considering. We've tried to replicate this with our playlists. But will certainly be improving!
Can this replace overcast or other podcasts apps? Something that's important to me is carplay since that is when I listen to the most. A bonus feature would be apple watch support.
@j5uh We're just getting started, watch and carplay will be coming a tad later... if you create an account, you'll get updates with the latest developments.
So incredibly proud to be a part of this project! Can’t wait to see it as a staple app on everyone’s device, and conversations happening where they should have been happening for a long time now. Well done team!
@patflynn Thank you for being part of this project from the beginning! I'm honored to have such an amazing group of people supporting the project and giving feedback. 🙏😭🤓
Awesome, will give it a try. May I have a question to someone who knows a lot about podcasts. Is there a way to filter the podcasts by language? Either in your app or elsewhere.
I’ve been waiting for this app to go live for a long period of time, ever since Paul messaged me about the concept. I truly believe in a time of chaos human connection is something we can all use and I’m excited to see where this goes. Oh and the UI is absolutely sexy and a pleasure to use! Congrats Paul and team!
Very VERY cool concept. Definitely giving it a go.
Congratulations on the first tutorial episode with your kid. That was nice.
Nothing but love for this project so far.
One annoying thing though.. although I’ve skipped choosing interests and podcast to import only my subscriptions, the app subscribed me to a LOT of podcasts that I have no interest into nor did I want on my list anyway.
And it’s really slow and hard to unsubscribe them (one by one, no batch actions).
Aaargh!
@lyondhur thank you for your kind words of support! Apologies for the inconvenience..
but the shows we pre-installed are part of a campaign to give our early users a starting place for interaction on the app.
@paulmikhaylenko it would be cool to be notify the user in advance.
It took me a while to delete them all and I wouldn’t really want to add any of them regardless.
It feels a bit like forced help if I may say so..? I’ll be sure to reinstall the app in the future to see how it evolves.
As of now, sticking to my other app and not transitioning. All the best.
PS: Not sure if this is a general issue, but it hogged quite a lot of my battery as well. iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone 11 Pro, on both.
One of the best designed podcasting apps out there. I’ve became a full believer when Listen let me import my existing library from Apple Podcasts. Keep it up @paulmikhaylenko!
@dave_goldblatt There's a ton :) Connect with other listeners, see what your friends are listening to, discuss episodes with other listeners globally using your voice, etc
Hey there PH! 👋 🐈
Paul here, founder @ Listen App
I know this is a strange time to launch products, but perhaps this will make quarantine more interesting.
Listen App is a new type of social network. Just as podcasting is intimate; we're extending the human voice into your social interactions.
Your app will come pre-installed with a few shows: Pandemic Checkin, Remotely Possible, and Market Snacks. The producers of these shows are looking to interact with you and create new episodes incorporating your voices!
Podcasting needs a new social network:
1. Traditional social platforms don't interface with audio (ex. you can’t post a link to an episode because everyone uses a different player).
2. When you listen to an episode, it’s extremely difficult to find other like-minded people who have also listened to it for you to discuss.
3. Podcasts subscribers are some of the best naturally forming communities that are completely untapped.
Meanwhile, podcasters are eager but don’t have a good way to engage with and build communities for their listeners.
So we took all of our lessons from or previous podcast app and designed something that I’m incredibly pleased to present to you!
Here's what makes Listen App different:
🎙 👄 We used voice+transcription instead of text for all posting/commenting. This allowed us to maintain the intimacy of the voice not just for listening but also for discussing.
💄📲Also, we're obsessed with product design and were fortunate to have some of the best designers working on this.
🤝🗣Listen App is uniquely bridging the gap between podcasters and listeners. Many fantastic podcasters joined the platform before we even launched.
I can’t wait to read your feedback and hear your voices on the app! Claim your handle to get the good ones :)
Let’s start to create a community of podcast listeners and geek out 🤓Btw, thanks @bramk for the hunt!
@paulmikhaylenko congrats on the launch! Love the idea behind it and appreciate how well you executed on the overall experience. Looking forward to seeing how the conversations evolve around episodes.
This reminds me of SoundCloud's ability for users to comment on tracks with timestamps. Brilliant. Haven't launched my podcast yet. Working on the distribution strategy and increasing engagement by using Listen App is not definitely going to be a part of it. Can't wait to use your product.
@paulmikhaylenko - the app looks fantastic. I ran into an issue during onboarding. I chose import from other app (other option was Apple Podcasts) since I use Pocket Casts as my main app and followed the instructions. Exported to OPML from Pocket Casts (which I've done successfully several times when I want to check out a new app) and used the "Copy to Listen" share extension but got an error that no files were found. When I went back a screen, it shows "212 of 212" which is the # of casts I subscribe to, but then it just hangs. Since it displays "Give us a minute to tidy up your feed,' I waited 7-8 minutes and nothing happened. I quit, restarted, tried the process again to no avail. But since Apple Podcasts was an option on onboarding, I figured I could access it in settings, too, but the only option there is to import from OPML.
