Hi everyone,
We’re excited to launch the Liveblocks Starter Kit to help developers kickstart their Next.js collaborative apps in minutes. With the Starter Kit, you can finally stop wasting weeks rebuilding table-stakes collaborative features—enabling you to focus on your core product:
- A workspace to browse and organize documents—including groups and private drafts
- The foundation of a customizable Figma-like real-time collaborative editor
- A share dialog with groups and user read/write permissions
- Real-time updates throughout the app—so your users won’t ever need to refresh again
The Liveblocks Starter Kit is built with the best tools the web ecosystem has to offer: TypeScript, Next.js, NextAuth, Radix, Node, CSS, and SWR. It’s also built with flexibility and customization in mind so that you can easily make it look and feel like your product, not an afterthought.
My co-founder and I have experienced first-hand how difficult and time-consuming building a real-time collaborative product can be, that’s why we created Liveblocks almost 2 years ago. The Starter Kit is the tool we wish we always had, so we hope you’ll like it!
And of course, AMA! The Liveblocks team and I will be around all day to answer questions 🙂
Congratulations on this new launch @stevenfabre ! 🎉
Honestly, you guys are great at creating developer products with a "designer vibe" if you know what I mean. You took so much care in the UI, and the experience looks smooth, even the video demo is 👌
Can't stress enough what a game-changer this is for those who want to start working on their own collaborative app idea. Click, deploy, and start tweaking it to your needs! Makes you productive in minutes 💪 Ideal for your next hackathon, too.
@nvie@stevenfabre haha agreed, this should actually be called the Hackathon Kit. 10 years ago with that product, in the small software company in Toulouse I was working at, I would have won all my hackathons 😂
Don't be fooled by how beautiful and easy it is to add real time collaboration - there is so much beneath the hood it just feels like magic. If you're looking to build the next Notion, Airtable, Figma, start here!
@edsim "Liveblocks, fooling people on how easy it is to implement real-time collaboration since 2021" 🤣 We’re happy to make it look easy for our customers and users
May the next Slack, Notion, and Figma be built with Liveblocks? This Starter Kit is one step forward in that direction — Keep it up, ?makers 👏👏
P.S. If you enjoy pixel perfection, you *must* read this thread by @stevenfabre 💎
Steven and team are insanely talented and have focused on such a great problem to solve! The docs are super clear and got me up and running in minutes. @stevenfabre congrats on an epic launch!!
@stevenfabre@dnosk Thank you, Daniel for the kind words; really appreciated! What is it you’re trying to build? Shimmer sounds very mysterious. Wanna share more with us?
So excited about releasing our Starter Kit!
You get all the table-stakes features of a collaborative app with a single command line, so you can focus on building the core of your product.
Congrats, @ctnicholas and @stevenfabre on the launch!
This is amazing. Building this yourself (and a performant version at that) is such a monumental feat. Makes a ton of sense as live collaboration almost feels like tables stakes these days. Great work!
@scott_hanford Agreed, collaboration should be a commodity. Please don't make me download a file to work with you, let me see what you're doing so that I don't waste time doing the same thing
Sounds really smart. This could be a HUGE time saver to many developers and builders out there. Congrats with this product and this launch. Wish you the best in 2023!
I used to be a .NET developer, but I changed career six years ago, moving into Product Management. Forgetting everything about dev...
A few months back, I decided to build a product to help me (and other actors) memorize their lines. I wanted my MVP to support basic features... and also collaboration.
Being a beginner, it took me three months to get to an MVP... full of bugs...
It was a nightmare for me, honestly.
That’s basically when Liveblocks gave me access to the Starter Kit. It took me a few seconds to install it and then a few hours to port my code.
In less than two days, I had a fully functional app, and I could focus on cool features to help actors memorize their lines. What an incredible feeling for a beginner!
Not only did it fast-tracked my development, but it also helped me understand some fundamental concepts of React, Server Side Rendering, API management, and CSS...
If you’re an expert, don’t waste time building rebuilding table-stakes collaborative features.
If you’re a beginner, follow the README and see how things are built. @ctnicholas did a fantastic job here! By starting with something that works, you’ll learn so much faster!
PS: I had early access to the Starter Kit because I work there 😉
