restaurant/venue reviews are dope, i read them a lot, but for me, i also wonder about what context the particular place i'm at/going to exists and this app seems like a nifty solve...awesome work, @ericwolfe (:
Eric Wolfe
@ptpells Yup, definitely going after people driven more by curiosity :). Foursquare, Yelp, and TripAdvisor already solve the venue review space extraordinarily well (in fact, you should be able to tap through to the Foursquare page for any of the restaurant-type places in the app), so I'll leave that to them.

I recently saw this featured on by Apple. for those of use who love to travel, and/or have map fetishes, Modern Atlas lets you wander around the planet, browsing new places to discover, before you take off jet plane...
Eric Wolfe
@ryanm Thanks for the hunt Ryan!
Eric Wolfe
Hi Product Hunt! I built Modern Atlas around the use case of planning trips and exploring new places. It maps out millions of guides and places from Wikivoyage, Wikipedia, and OpenStreetMaps, and gives you the freedom to craft custom maps and trips tailored to your interests. I'm the solo designer/developer, so feel free to ask me anything! eric@modernatlas.co

@edalarconreal Thanks! Let me know if you have any feedback!

@ericrwolfe @modernatlas This is really cool! I love it. You guys should try if you can to integrate VR/AR to visualize these locations. That would be f** amazing but also probably very hard to do especially without budget. But if you can find a great partner in that field, you can make it happen.

@ericrwolfe really awesome app - I've been using it to plan a vacation. Would love to see an iPad app that syncs via iCloud. Planning would be better on the bigger screen.
Blake Samic
@blakesamic just realizing it is universal (nice!). iCloud sync would be great.

I’ve been beta testing Modern Atlas, and really enjoyed using it in combination with Rego. Love how it easily pulls-in all the information you need.
Eric Wolfe
@michaxndr Checking out Rego now, I'd actually like to add in routes at some point. Let me know if you have any design feedback!
Ray Wu
I love how it displays gorgeous photos as travel inspiration
Eric Wolfe
@raywu Thanks! I wanted to incorporate a visual element that would cater to the wanderlusters that seek out incredible places on apps like Instagram and Pinterest. I used the 500px API to show feeds of "visual inspiration" that use the photos' geotags to let you bookmark some amazing photo spots.
Ray Wu
@ericrwolfe how do you do QA for the image quality from 500px?
Eric Wolfe
@raywu Haha, umm, 😬. I sort by popularity, so it tends to self select, but occasionally you'll find a mistagged image in there. Still something I'm working on improving 😄
Pat Cheung
Can't wait to use this in my travels!
Eric Wolfe
@patcheung Sweet, where are you headed next?

What's the business model?
David Keegan
Awesome app! Was just in SF for WWDC and used it to keep track of amazing restaurants! Fun way to explore new places and highlight places to visit.
Eric Wolfe
@iamkgn Really glad your liking it David!

App = purchased. My only complaint/suggestion is to change the map color scheme/design formatting to something WAY less distracting. Here is an example: http://bluetide.pro/15Axr/3CpyQuOb - As you can see, it's near impossible to read/use. It's so busy looking. It would be nice if the streets were more muted and such. Here are some themes I found online for Openstreetmap's: https://userstyles.org/styles/br... (cc: @ericrwolfe)
Zach R
@ericrwolfe Maybe it could be a settings option where you could change the map color theme so it's a win-win for everyone based on what you like/want to see! :)
Eric Wolfe
@bluetidepro Thanks for the feedback Zach! Yeah the map styles are something I'm still iterating on. Do you think is just the underlying map style, or do you find the density of places a problem? I'll try pulling down the saturation on the road color and reducing the road labels.
Zach R
@ericrwolfe It could be a bit of both. Again, it would be super awesome if you made it so it was all just settings the user could toggle themselves. Like they could basically build the map it displays. Turn off/on what labels they want, pick from various color schemes, etc. Just an idea! :)
Eric Wolfe
@bluetidepro awesome! Definitely something to think about :)
David Gudai
@ericrwolfe @bluetidepro great/relevant article, should be some good nuggets in it for you :-) http://www.justinobeirne.com/ess...

Looking forward to get the Android version :-)

How does this not have more upvotes?
Eric Wolfe
@paul_hq Haha good question! What is it about the app that's most compelling to you?
Ryan Mickle
@paul_hq all the product hunters are napping.
Eric Wolfe
@ryanm @paul_hq All the travelers be traveling
James Fisher
Fantastic work, app is sweet as hell I love it. This should be the top of PH today!
Eric Wolfe
@bantheinternet really appreciate that James! Would love to hear more of your feedback about the app, esp since you're solving similar problems
Max Pelzner
This looks really great! Love the design. I've noticed a lot of people are jumping into the curation of tour guides / experiences for traveling. I see some similarities to what Latitude is building too. http://www.latitudetours.com/
Eric Wolfe
@whoismaxpelzner Latitude looks pretty cool! We don't do any real curation in Modern Atlas yet. Right now it's more for the curiosity-motivated travelers who prefer to self-select the places that interest them. However, from talking to users, it looks like there are some travelers that do want more pre-curated lists of places, so it's hopefully something we can get smarter about.
Pavel Škrobánek
Great work guys!
Eric Wolfe
@pavelkrobnek Thanks! Let me know if you have any feedback as you use the app!
Brendan Loudermilk
Really happy to see this in the App Store. Modern Atlas solves a real need I've had for years that no other tool has solved well enough: easily curated travel maps. The pairing with wiki voyage is clutch since I just roll into a new country, read the main article, then dive in to areas or activities that interest me. Great work, Eric!
Eric Wolfe
@bloudermilk Really glad to hear Modern Atlas is solving a big problem for you. Keep me updated on your travels!
Maxim Pestun
Very nice application, will definitely use it during my next trip!
Steven Law
Beautiful implementation and will be so useful for my trip to Paris and Budapest, well done. iPad Air 2 struggles a bit with the intensity of the graphics but hey ho.
Shiv Patel
Hella awesome for traveling to a new city ... but sometimes we just need to explore our own city
Tyler Swartz
I tried out the beta of Modern Atlas and found it a great way to discover the hidden gems in my own city. It was helpful when I was in a new part of SF to use map based discovery to find interesting things to do and see. Highly recommend! It also sounds like @ericrwolfe has some interesting features in the works
Eric Wolfe
@tylerswartz thanks Tyler! Really glad you found it useful in your home city. One of the hardest parts of the travel space is building long-lasting engagement and utility in the time between trips. Definitely have some stuff in the works there :)
