Naked Home Body Scanner — Track your fitness journey in 3D.

Naked is a first of its kind product that uses infrared light to scan your body to better track your fitness. The scale rotates you 360° in 15s as sensors in the mirror create your 3D body model. The Naked App gives you access to a host of holistic data, metrics, and visuals, including body fat %, measurements, and side-by-side scan comparisons.

How does the accuracy of this compare to things like BodySpec (which I've used before), @farhad_farahbakhshian?
Farhad Farahbakhshian
@rrhoover -- Good question. We're actually using body spec and other DXA systems as a reference method, our body fat algorithms are accurate to approximately +/- 2.5%. This is considerably higher than other in home body composition assessments, like bioimpedance, which has an accuracy of approximately +/- 8% and fluctuates markedly with varying levels of hydration. The most challenging thing about measuring body fat accurately is that it's very difficult to establish ground truth. Hence, why we're using DXA as our reference.

While the scanner is a big (see: pricey) investment, the scan quality, precise measurements, objective comparisons, real-world motivation, and high-quality hardware make the purchase well worth it.

If you have questions (or comments), feel free to comment on my review!

Pros:

High-quality hardware, seamless integration with software, detailed scans, precise measurements, objective comparisons, and intuitive app :)

Cons:

A big investment (but worth the price)

Matt Van Horn
When pitching your products to friends, partners and investors is it ever awkward to show them your scans?
Farhad Farahbakhshian
@mvanhorn -- it's nice to flip dynamics with the investors actually. Having an investor get Naked and take a scan never gets old :) Family and friends get pretty fun if you're doing some type of fitness challenge together. My bother and I tend to get pretty competitive.
Ben Nader
Congratulation on bringing such an awesome and innovative product to the product. I see the mirror is plugged into the wall. But what about the scale? Does it need batteries? How often do I need to change them and what kind of batteries?
Ed Sclater
@bennader_ The scale contains a lithium ion battery that only needs to be recharged approximately once every 30-40 scans. The Naked App will tell you when your battery is low and you charge via a USB-C cable that connects the scale to the mirror!
Ben Nader
@ed_sclater Awesome. I'm glad I don't have to buy/replace batteries. I assume you guys also provide the USB-C cable you mentioned above right?
Farhad Farahbakhshian
@ed_sclater @bennader_ Yep, we sure do :)

[Actually I've been using it 3 months but there's no option for that]

I've been a Naked tester since April. The initial advantage of Naked over any other approach to body measurement is being able to see and measure the impact of a localized muscle program (e.g. seeing calf / bicep diameter change). Also, seeing my hips/waistline shrink never gets old.

The broader effect that only sinks in once you spend time with it is in knowing that you have to stand in front of it (nearly) naked the next day. Always in the back of my head is the thought that I'll scan tomorrow. Naked is so accurate that skipping too many workouts or eating unhealthily shows up quickly both in my numbers and in my 3D model.

So as a commitment device, it has functioned a lot like a human personal trainer might. It kept me on a flawless 60-day fitness challenge for the first time in my life.

As a side benefit, it's sleek and attractive, fits neatly into the space where I used to have my bathroom scale and adds a full-length mirror where I lacked one before.

Pros:

Detailed fitness data that you can see as well as measure (as frequently as you like)

Cons:

It turns out my pants weren't shrinking after all.

Would be interesting to integrate it with online shopping sites to find the perfect fit for your body, specially the feet size.
Ed Sclater
@omaressa14 online shopping is definitely an area we can add significant value to, particularly in the clothing space. We're part of an interesting pilot right now. Feet size is a little more challenging, hence why there are companies that focus just on scanning feet
Andrew Fraser
Wow really nice work - this seems like a potential leap forward in fitness/health. One quick question: does Naked support multiple users on the same body scanner?
Ed Sclater
@drew_fraser sure does! Each scanner comes with three licenses
Andy Smith
@drew_fraser Not a problem. I've been using it in beta with my whole family and Naked creates a separate user for each person in the app on your phone. You can even log in and out in the app to switch users.

Good morning ProductHunt, We’re excited to announce that Naked starts shipping today. This journey began 3 years ago with just my co-founder Ed and I, and the team (now close to 50) has been hard at work bringing the product to life with backing from Founders Fund, NEA, and others. We can’t begin to express how excited we are to deliver Naked to our customers’ homes. This product is designed to provide folks with a more holistic way of tracking their fitness progress. We want to take the focus off of the scale and help users visualize their progress faster than anything else. As an special offer to all you Hunters out there, you can use NAKED-HUNT for $100 off a Naked. As we are currently in the process of fulfilling all of our pre-orders before shipping new orders, we are taking deposits on our website to ship at the end of the year. Please feel free to ask myself and my co-founder Ed any questions you might have about the technology, the app, the team, and our future vision for Naked. Cheers, Farhad

@farhad_farahbakhshian congratulations on launching. It looks like this is a very unique product. I don’t see any others with the same functionality in this price range. The main application is fitness. Any other that you foresee down the road?
Farhad Farahbakhshian
@vullal1 -- we're seeing some really interesting applications that could be enabled with Naked. The need for body information and a platform to host it will grow over time. Imagine being able to see how clothes fit with without ever having to try them on. Or, getting real-time advice from your trainer or physician based on how your body is changing over time. At a high level, we think that having a digital version of you will help conform the world to your body.
Andrew Farah
@farhad_farahbakhshian Nice work! I imagine the data you'll collect will be interesting at a larger scale. Do you imagine there will be value to the broader dataset or trend analysis becomes possible? i.e. Workouts that are most effective, diets, etc?
Ed Sclater
@farhad_farahbakhshian @andrewfarah Absolutely! We're already actively engaging in research to understand how your body shape and metrics relate to health outcomes and success in both exercise and nutrition programs.
Tem Nugmanov
Hey @farhad_farahbakhshian & @ed_sclater! Looks awesome. I'm big into fitness data and curious about the product. 1) Can your data processing give a better estimation of body fat than regular bioelectric impedance scales? 2) If not in #1, is the main value prop the packaging and analysis of data that can be obtained by a measurement set (scale, tape, calipers, phone)? 3) If yes in #2, what customer segment is willing to pay for that value prop – bodybuilders, athletes, recreational?
Jared Allgood
Cool looking scans! How do you think a scan is better or more actionable than just tracking my weight over time?
Ed Sclater
@jared_allgood Great question! The problem with weight is that it distills your entire health down to a single one-dimensional number that doesn't tell the whole story. However, your scan will provide you the rich visual information to keep doing what you're doing, if for example, your weight is unchanged but you've gained 5lbs of muscle and lost 5lbs of fat.

This is some serious Black Mirror type shit. I love it, the ad video bought me.
Ed Sclater
glad you like it @hroland_ !
Daeshawn Ballard
This is really cool!
Farhad Farahbakhshian
@imdaeshawn Thanks, Daeshawn :) We're glad you like it!
Mark Silver

It's changing my relationship with my body and the idea of what a mirror is.

Pros:

Sleek product, accurate interface, accurate body scan but feels gentle

Cons:

Accurate body scan ;) A bit of wait.

Amin
Cool product! When will you be shipping internationally ?
Farhad Farahbakhshian

Scott J Freeman
is there a weight limit to the scale for it to turn?
Farhad Farahbakhshian
Hi @sjfme, our current weight limit is 330 lbs
Nina Shahverdyan
THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT I NEED IN MY LIFE. Such a great idea, guys! As a failed fitness freak I can say that the product is kind of a necessity because It will help thousands of people no to give up and become better and better and better.
Babken Karapetyan
amusing.
Kanika Bhutani
Such an innovative UI. It is very important that an app is required for our body information. Nice app

First of its kind, I love mine! I have been a beta tester for this for the last 3 months. Now I wouldn’t want to be without it. Super easy to set up and use.
