👋 Hi Hunters and Makers! So … what comes after Duolingo? NAMA! It’s the answer to this age-old question. We built a messaging platform that allows you to practice a language while doing an activity you already do. Messaging your friends and family! 💡 Scientific Approach NAMA immerses your text conversations in the language you are practicing and attempts to seamlessly aid you in practicing a language by giving you translation suggestions, auditory feedback, and reinforcing your learning with spaced repetition. 80% percent of our hundreds of beta users reported that it helped them practice more than other apps in the market! 🌎 Use NAMA anywhere! (Two products in one?) When you install NAMA you will also get access to the NAMA KEYBOARD to use in any iOS app! You’ll be able to track and practice all of the words and phrases you learn in any app in our main application! 🎮 Gamification The more you practice, the more achievements you will unlock! NAMA rewards your effort with badges that you can flex on your friends! There will only be one NAMA Genius Badge !! 🗣 No Native Speaker Required Any two users can practice whatever language they want, and we will ensure that communication works between them and that practicing is effective! This is one of the many things that separates us from Tandem. (We also support group chats) 🏅 Mission It’s to make language practicing more accessible for ALL languages. Not only the most profitable ones. We currently support more than 100 languages and motivate people to reach those goals by making it as effortless as possible! NAMA is still in its early stages but with your help and feedback, we can truly build the ultimate language practicing platform

@nico_lopez This app looks super awesome! I would use it all the time to talk to extended family and study abroad friends! So excited to use it!
Hank Breckenridge
@nico_lopez @emily_heim1 I'm so glad we could bridge this gap! Let me know how NAMA works for you!
Shruti Pattekar
@nico_lopez Beta user here! I really enjoyed using this app to talk to my friends and get better at my native language, Marathi! It is extremely useful and has so many unique features that makes it the best language learning app I’ve actually ever used! (And I have used a lot.) Thank you for creating this app! It will truly make a difference in this world when people will be able to communicate with each other with much more ease :)
Raj Gark
@nico_lopez @shruti_pattekar Shruti, lets talk in Marathi! I've been meaning to get better with reading and writing, this is so cool

Congrats on the launch! Curious, how do you test translations on such scale and with so many languages?
Jörg Doku
@html5cat That's an excellent question. We're currently evaluating translation quality using the BLEU benchmark, across a wide variety of open source parallel corpus datasets.

Congratulations ?makers on shipping Nama! I know how hard you've all worked on it so it's such a joy to see it live on PH. Thanks for allowing me to be part of the beta and i'm super excited to see where this goes! 🚀🎉

Wow! Idea is really interesting. Maybe it would be easier to switch to the app if it was connected to WhatsApp, Telegram or any other messenger so that main dialog would be saved there and NAMA will be the upper layer adding language learning functionality. Just an idea :) Anyway, you did the great job and it'll be fascinating for me to watch your progress!
Hank Breckenridge
@superbulgakov Thank you so much for your feedback! We actually have a feature similar to what you are describing. The NAMA Keyboard comes with NAMA Chat, and it helps you send messages in the language you are trying to learn in any app! I would love to hear about what you think of this feature!
Nico Lopez
@superbulgakov Very interesting! Our keyboard is the way that we try to interface with other apps, but I do like the idea of Having NAMA be an additional layer to all your conversations! We will definitely looking into that more! Thanks for the support!
Andrew 🏦
I also liked the translating feature. Which engine do you use? And won’t it be expensive on the bigger scale (like thousands active users per day)?
Nico Lopez
@superbulgakov Actually, thanks to Jorg, we are running a really good many to many model that runs natively on each device. Making our server costs basically zero! He worked with one of the engineers that developed one of the GPU M2M translation models and made it run on CPU so that we could have it natively. I'll ask him to respond to this question in more detail!
Jörg Doku
@superbulgakov You raise excellent questions! Once you install NAMA, you'll have access to the NAMA Keyboard. Here's a mini tutorial on how to set it up! http://namachat.com/keyboard.html

I'm super excited to try this. I tried to learn French from Youtube and found it was useless when I travelled and couldn't converse in French. There's something different about learning a language and conversing in it. And I'm excited to see if this app solves it.
Jörg Doku
@thiscodeworks Great to hear you love Nama!!!

I've found that texting my family and relatives in Russian actually improved my Russian, so it's cool to see that concept implemented more broadly! Especially given the low barrier to entry of texting, particularly for people with social anxiety. The auto-translating to different languages feature sounds like it would help when you don't have a partner to practice with or are too anxious to try! Reminds me of the method of changing your device and app settings to a different language to practice reading. Patiently awaiting the Android app!
Nico Lopez
@agilgur5 That's our hope! and the Android version is coming, just you wait! :D
Duc Tran
I have played with the app and found the combined experiene of messaging and practicing a language quite intuitive and seamless just like any other messaging app. Congrats on your launch! @nico_lopez
Hank Breckenridge
@nico_lopez @ducmtran Thank you, Duc! I would love to hear any feedback you have about how effective NAMA is for you! Thanks for being an early adopter of NAMA!
Nico Lopez
@ducmtran Glad you've enjoyed it! We really want to deliver an experience that is seamless, and at some point in the future make NAMA compelling enough to replace your normal messaging apps. But until we reach that point we are offering the NAMA Keyboard feature! We are getting there though! Also feel free to leave any feedback in our discord: https://discord.gg/NbpHxD96 Thanks for the support 🙏

Groundbreaking product bringing translation and chatting together. It's never been more fun to practice my Spanish. Highly recommend!
Jörg Doku

Why do you require a phone number? Looks interesting but I won’t be signing up.

Congrats on the launch - these low friction ways to learn (like Fluent - https://www.producthunt.com/post...) are great

Trevina Tan
Tried NAMA and discovered that it’s a truly stellar messaging app for language learning. Intuitive translations and sleek interface makes it so much easier to pick up common phrases and grammar rules that you would use in everyday conversation. An amazing tool for learning a new language — gone are the days of going by textbook phrases now that we have NAMA guiding our chats.
Hank Breckenridge
@trevina_tan I am so glad that you like NAMA! We really think that this could change how languages are learned across the world. We have really focussed on making sure you are learning the words that are useful for YOU! Are there any improvements or features that you would recommend? Thank you for using NAMA!
Raj Gark

This is an awesome system. It's a great way to keep up on the languages you don't always get to practice (all while having real conversation)!
Jörg Doku
@evan_quist That's at the heart of Nama's design! Awesome that it's been helpful for you.
Andy Michaelson
Hey @jorghi12 @nico_lopez @aniab @hankbreckenrid1 @joi_stack I just tried out the Nama Keyboard (saw your link post here: http://namachat.com/keyboard.html) and absolutely loved it!
