Hey all - I sold my last startup last year, I focused on the business side but dabbled on the tech so I spent the last few months exploring AI dev tools to improve my technical skillset. This is my first product I built and shipped myself using mostly Cursor to aid the process.
I used to be a tech YouTuber (MS Tech), I started burning out around 500k subs so I stopped making videos and pivoted to tech startups. I've stayed up-to-date with tech YouTube, and was particularly interested in the Honey drama. Not actually finding the best coupons is a bad look, but I think the affiliate side is way more interesting - I actually like the idea of sharing affiliate revenue, but I don't understand why they did it secretly or barely gave any value to the user.
Rather than try to answer those questions, I just built what I think Honey should have done using my Amazon affiliate code from my YouTube days. Functionality is dead simple - whenever you are on an Amazon product page, click the popup to activate and you'll get 2% back on your purchase. It basically replaces all of Honey's shadiness with absolute transparency: it gives the user the explicit choice to activate and replace any existing affiliate code.
It also gives most of the affiliate commission to the user. Amazon affiliate commissions vary based on product category and range from 0% to upwards of 10%, with an average of about 3% (at least from my 5 years of data). So on average, Nectar only keeps 1% and the user gets the lion's share with 2%.
It's absolutely in beta right now, so to be super transparent about the current limitations:
1) It only works in the US, on Amazon, and for product categories with at least 2% affiliate commission (the vast majority)
2) It doesn't work with Buy Now and isn't perfect at multi-item carts or when payment/shipping options change, so for best results do 1 item at a time: Activate -> Add to Cart -> Proceed to Checkout -> Place Order
3) You need a balance of at least $10 before you can redeem, but you can redeem via either Amazon Gift Card or PayPal
---Planned v1 Improvements (3-4 weeks)---
1. International support
2. Better affiliate tracking to only require activation once per 24h
3. Better support for multi-item carts and payment/shipping changes
4. More redemption methods
5. Support for Buy Now
Very eager for feedback, whether that's bugs or feature requests!
