I'll let @jamie_cushenan go into more detail (CTO of the project along with @hicham_zaidi giving amazing ENG power), but the main focus is on using the original asset as a roadmap for defining a better and reusable prompt. Which allows us to build further long-term with larger variations with our modeling.

@hicham_zaidi @nathantross @tonyabracadabra That's a fun question to answer for a programmer :) To keep the essence of the origional we use image analysis tools to write a highly detailed description of the image, this description is then simplified and has any brand/trademark references removed from the text using a custom ChatGPT model. We take this simplified brand/trademark clean description and turn it into a Flux prompt (again using the custom ChatGPT model) We ensure the images are truly distinctive by randomising a number of factors each time such as the seed Flux uses and the image analysis tool gives a slightly different description each time on purpose

@alexxiang oh yes. So our system aims to be transformative and independent from the original without being derivative. Our prompt system relies on multiple sources beyond the original as well. Based on the output the result should fit those guidelines but you absolutely can regenerate variations.

@nathantross @alexxiang I gave a breakdown to this question in another comment, I'm happy to go into specifics :) The AI is able to pick up on brand related visuals, if you can see a brand reference so can the AI, these brand references are removed from the anaylsed description of the image, so "harry potter" would become "a wizard" for example. If the text doesn't have any brand/trademarks then the prompt for the image generator AI wont have them either

Congrats on the launch, @nathantross @jamie_cushenan @hicham_zaidi. Interesting tool. Just curious - in terms of legality, isn't this a grey area? For example, does the AI ensure the output is distinct enough to avoid any potential copyright concerns?

@ashitvora extremely appreciate the love! In relation to your question when you think of GenAI at all today it all is in that grey area space. This is definitely an evolving topic. I'd like to think our tool allows a jumping off point for more creativity and exploration. Which allows for bigger conversations about copyright abuse by copyright owners and non owners.

Should copyright be abolished? Or all intellectual property rights and protections? If someone created a clone of "No More Copyright" and charged a bunch of money for a service that doesn't work, would that be okay? Is this the same idea as generic drugs, but applied to IP? Or luxury brand knock-offs? Just curious where this approach to IP will lead — and whether it will ultimately kill or promote creativity long term.

One question at a time ;) My opinion, we need to have open conversations on copyright law being used 99.9% of the time to actually limit creativity versus expand it. I’m original from the art space, studied art for my degree actually. So turning this back on you, what do you think about copyright law today. Does it work properly? Or does it hurt artists primarily since it is outdated. For example. You hunted Sora, you know that wouldn’t pass copyright muster like most GenAI models today. And feel free to check out and create some images on nomorecopyright.com to get inspiration, 3,000+ generations yesterday.

@chrismessina btw I think you are confusing and mixing patent law with copyright law. Both need updates though. I'd recommend looking at the history of the insulin patent for the reason we need generic drugs. Creator sold the patent for $1 so everyone could have free access but with abuse of patents up until a few months ago it could cost an individual $1k+ per month in US leaving people to skip so they could eat. Trying to understand the point here a bit. Are you anti-generic / accessible drugs?

@nathantross good to run into each other again. :) Hopefully you remember that I like to serve as an internet provocateur (i.e. a well-intended trollish sort?) in poking at this. I would agree that IP law generally (though there's much that's been settled) is being upended by generative AI. "Fair use" didn't contemplate work being reduced to a set of vectors and those vectors and embeddings being remixed at scale across the entire internet. I'm not familiar enough w/ the economic intention of these laws in terms of degree, only that the concern of a government-granted monopoly over an ephemeral thing like "an idea" or "an expression" was meant to prevent copies of the original work from eroding the value of the original work. It was meant to encourage people to publish and share their ideas sooner, rather than hoarding them for fear of the ideas "being stolen". But abundance mathematics does require a rethinking of these rules and laws, but there's a real hard problem around equitable redistribution... Should we move towards a UBI-style approach to support all creators, or should we rely on market dynamics which currently favor those who either can afford lawsuits (e.g. The New York Times) or those with existing massive followings (e.g. someone like Elon Musk who constantly appropriates memes and jokes from accounts with fewer followers on X)? Doubtful we'll resolve it soon, and your site only pushes the question further forward.

@nathantross I'm not getting them confused; I'm asking general questions about IP protections. Patents protect novel and non-obvious inventions and technological innovations, whereas copyright protects original artistic, literary, and intellectual works of authorship. They serve different functions in the market because one is about applying techniques of production to industrial products whereas the other tends to center on expression, presentation, and information.

@william_jin I use it as a jumping off point for brainstorming. But another way is replacing presentation images with it. What's really cool you can take live photos and use them to transform into more elegant versions. Here's an example of a photo I took with my watch transformed...

@nachodeh amazing feedback! We focused on lower sizes for speed but maybe that's a variable we can add. Similar to quality of jpeg export. Also for instructions. Do you mean you can directly edit the prompt or add a new prompt on top? Any extra detail here will go on our sprint board ha

Congrats on the launch :) I had a play with it and I'm not sure why I would use this over midjourney. I could see it being useful for someone who wants a really simple interface but the model needs more training. I found the images to be weighted more towards cartoon/cgi vs photorealistic. The model didn't grasp the aesthetic style of the original. This could be useful for a person/business who already has some of their own photos and wants to multiple them like gremlins. For example, a coffee shop could upload their own images of people enjoying their coffee then create more of the same for social media.
